Summary

You think you know the truth about the people you love. But one discovery can change everything....

Eight-year-old Billy goes missing one day, out flying his kite with his sister, Rose. Two days later he is found dead.

Sixteen years on, Rose still blames herself for Billy's death. How could she have failed to protect her little brother? Rose has never fully recovered from the trauma, and one of the few people she trusts is her neighbour Ronnie, whom she has known all her life. But one day Ronnie falls ill, and Rose goes next door to help him...and what she finds in his attic room turns her world upside down.

Rose thought she knew the truth about what happened to Billy. She thought she knew her neighbour. Now the only thing she knows is that she is in danger....

The Mistake is a completely gripping thriller that will keep you up all night, from the top 10 best-selling author of Blink, Liar and Safe with Me. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.

Disappointing

I have a real problem with the females in K L Slater's books, they are so spineless and portrayed as helpless victims. Rose in this latest book needed a shake, she was so wet I got totally fed up of the dialogue which was on a loop about her she was disempowered and helpless. I think I will give this author a miss in future unless some more gutsy females are portrayed.

In spite of the characters I thought the narration was good, and I did enjoy the twist at the end.

It was OK

The story is quite good but feels drawn out and repetitive and like others who have commented I got annoyed at the helpless Rose. Although I do imagine that’s what teenage girls are like and it would serve as a good warning book to younger girls. I generally enjoyed the story overall.

The narrator was average, I didn’t like the voice she put on for Gareth Farnham - he was far too obviously not a good guy and that Australian son, Eric - OMG I burst out laughing when he talked it was awful!!

Nevertheless a good story and ending.

Gripping

Gripping, just amazing, as this is my first fiction book, I tent to go with none fiction, I found my self being frustrated at parts, going from present day to past days, having a feeling of wanting to know what happened like in non fiction, but I also found that to be a good thing as well, filling in back sotry and leaving you wanting to find out what happened next.

Predictable and drawn out

Thiis book had a lot of potential and I felt the main character was very believable, until the end.

I guessed the ending just before the 'discovery' and the book dragged out the reveal. We spend most of the time listening to the main characters thoughts and trauma, very little happens and the reveal is basically an accident. Overall it was pretty poor. I wouldn't recommend. I liked the narrator though.

Amazing story and storytelling!

I've been listening K. L. Slater's books for a while now. I didn't knew her books before and the first one got me hooked right away. She has the certain style of writing and specific pattern she uses in her stories. I like that. Every story I've listened she got me hooked quickly and The Mistake is one of those books, as well.

The story starts well and all characters comes familiar easily. The storyteller is STUNNING of reading this stuff. It lits the light to the story and made me really believe those characters were real. I have a habit of diving into the stories little too much and literally began to like or hate certain characters. In The Mistake there's one evil character that I literally HATED, I can imagine these kind of people actually existing. My personal experiences have impact of how I take certain characters and situations and in this story there's many things that hit too close and I could feel the pain.

Few times when the main character did something or went somewhere I was like "No! What're doing!!" Especially in the end part I wondered few situations and how realistically someone would act like that, realizing that probably none. I think the end part went quickly, when I wanted it to be more slow and grippling, making listeners thrilled. But overall this whole package is AMAZING!

K. L. Slater is one of my favourite authors, definitely. I'm gonna listed all of her books :]
