Summary
The first original novel tying into the critically acclaimed and much-missed Firefly series from creator Joss Whedon
The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. Yet the Browncoats had held the valley for weeks against all odds, before being ordered to lay down their arms. Command stated they refused to send in airpower because the ground war was "too hot". But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true....
While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war. As the rest of the crew struggle to locate him, Mal is placed on trial for his life, fighting compelling evidence that someone did indeed betray them to the Alliance all those years ago. As old comrades and old rivals crawl out of the woodwork, Mal must prove his innocence, but his captors are desperate and destitute, and will settle for nothing less than the culprit’s blood.

Loved it!
I loved Firefly and Serenity so I was either going to love this or fell disappointed. I am happy to stay it was the former! I loved it!
I could picture the actors playing out the scenes and their characters rang true.
The story was great, weaving past and present actions together, to form a tale that unwove brilliantly.
The narration was excellent.
I will look to get the other audiobooks in this series. ☺️

This is the real thing
This could’ve been an episode right out of the series, it’s all there, the crew, serenity, the verse, the odd jobs, obstacles and some goram fine performance by James and James 😎

Loved it but...
Who is the big damn hero? Book? Mal? Vera?
Also when will we find out why book has such alliance privileges? Other than that, really enjoyed it and will buy the next one

Like nothing in the verse
As a fan of the show it’s been years since I’ve read, seen or in this case heard anything on the Serenity crew, so to stumble across this has reignited my love of the franchise. This is a story that runs like an episode, but with all the frills of the cast shining through. The performance is brilliant, truly capturing the characters, but speaks to the source material to allow that. Hard to say, but feel a new listener could enjoy this without having seen anything of the show, but for Browncoats this is a must.

One for the fans
A nice addition to the Firefly saga. Provides some background to Mal and titbits of additional information on other members of the crew. Very well written and narrated, capturing the essence of the characters and making you feel in familiar territory. Fans will appreciate this but not really something for anyone unfamiliar with the cult show/film.
