Summary

Severing a cherished relationship is one of the most painful experiences in life - and cutting those emotional ties to a loved one can feel almost like ending an addiction. Up till now, people recovering from other problems were able to get real help - like AA and rehab - while those struggling in the aftermath of traumatic breaks dealt with platitudes and friends insisting they should "get over it already". But now Exaholics Anonymous treats getting over an ex like kicking a chemical habit.

Written by counselor and therapist Dr. Lisa Bobby, Exaholics offers meaningful support and advice to anyone trapped in the obsessive pain of a broken, or dying, attachment. She helps the brokenhearted heal, showing them, on a deep level, how to develop a conceptual framework for their experience, understand the emotional processes at work inside themselves, find the path to recovery, and free themselves of shame, injured ego, and remorse. In-depth case studies of others' journeys will illuminate the way to future happiness.

Solid explanation of what happens in exaholic brains

A deep look at what happens after difficult separations. Quite heavy on the brain analysis, but some good advice (though not enough). Important read for anyone struggling to move on, especially in the first few months after a breakup. Didn’t really mention situations where people are stuck in a cycle for years and have done therapy/most of the suggestions in the book, but still struggle.

Amazing!

This book helped me cope with feelings of rejection after my breakup. It's very empathic, precise. It's a must have in the library for self help in my opinion.

A good start to recovery over heartbreak and getting over ex

This book speaks about things you may be experiencing and not able to tell others. If your feeling isolated after a breakup good book to read. Last chapter could be better.

Rambles on

So we understand what an exaholic is in the first few sentences. Then the author goes on ad nauseum about how it feels to be one. We know already!! She spends an excessive amount of prose on the neuroscience of it which is not helpful for a person suffering with the pangs of sadness from a breakup.Let’s get to the healing and getting better part. That has been squeezed into one chapter and is quite useless, frankly. What a waste of time. A better, more practical and well- written book is Getting Past Your Breakup. Gives you advice on what to do straight away.
