Summary

‘This book is here to take you inside the daily realities of Westminster. I don’t mean that it’s going to bore you to death with a blow by blow account of what it’s like to sit on the Statutory Instrument Debate on Naval regulations 1968-2020 – but to demystify the places and practice of politics.’

From agonising decisions on foreign air strikes to making headlines about orgasms, from sitting in on history-making moments at the UN to eating McCain potato smiles at a black-tie banquet in China, the life of a politician is never dull. And it’s also never been more important. But politics is far bigger than Westminster, and in this book Jess Phillips makes the compelling case for why now, more than ever, we all need to be a part of it.

With trademark humour and honesty, Jess Phillips lifts the lid on what a career in politics is really like and why it matters – to all of us. This is the inside story of what’s really going on.

Excellent Stuff!

Having not been keen on Jess Phillips in the past (as I was a supporter of Jeremy Corbyn initially), I nevertheless, devoured this book very quickly, finding it difficult to put down! She reads it very well. It’s informative, interesting, entertaining and at times, funny. Highly recommended!

Phenomenal

Absolutely loved this honest account of the realities of life as an MP. LOVE Jess, her no nonsense and honest human approach is refreshing. Some of the stories are shocking, especially the kiss on the email leading to the magistrate ruling evidence inadmissible. I’m so impressed that Jess manages to remain her wonderful self in this environment 🤩 this book is mega, a must read and something which should be given out in schools 🥰

Well constructed with good insights

Paints quite a different picture of politics that you might have got through tabloid newspapers or social media attention grabbing headlines. Explains why most MPs are excellent value for taxpayers and their staff plug a lot of holes by helping those in need as well as those advocating changes in the law. Easy to listen to and worthwhile. Read by the author which gave it more authenticity.

Very interesting and well read

Fascinating peek into the day to day life of an MP and the inner workings of Parliament, with a nice splash of comic relief. Also feels very authentic being read by the Author. Would recommend for anyone interested in UK politics.

Nothing new…

Though still entertaining. I think Jess Phillips and I grew up in the same home!

Great insightful listen

Loved this book. Really useful for someone like me on the fringes of politics. Jess is real and her views were no surprise to me. Her complete disregard and dismissal of the Scottish political system was a huge disappointment. That is about education and she will one day hopefully find the time to actually look into it properly. saying that we are all entitled to our opinion and it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book.

Honest and informative look at the role of a proper politician in it for the right reasons

An informative book for anyone no matter from what political persuasion though obviously some would find her honesty and opinions infuriating. The narration was excellent and only right to be from Jess’s own voice and heart. Thankyou for writing this and continuing the fight.

Funny and uplifting

Very easy and interesting listen - there has to be a more fairer way to allow people to get into politics (if they so choose)

Absolutely fascinating. The dedication that Jess Phillips shows to her constituency, her role as an MP and her country is wonderful to learn about. Highly recommend this audiobook.
