Summary

The fifth volume of memoirs from the author who inspired the BBC and Channel 5 series All Creatures Great and Small. Charmingly read by Nicholas Ralph, who plays James Herriot in the TV series.

In Every Living Thing James Herriot brings back familiar and much-loved friends, including his partner Siegfried and his most lucrative patient, the delightful Tricki Woo. There are some some new arrivals too, such as the abandoned and terrified mongrol Titch who finds the perfect home with a gruff grocer and feral kittens Olly and Ginny who live in James and wife Helen's back garden. Above all, the veterinary practise in Darrowby is enlivened by a marvelouslly eccentric assistant, Calum Buchanan, who arrives with a pet badger and proceeds to add dogs, owls and a monkey called Mortimer to his growing menagerie.

Since they were first published, James Herriot’s memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Full of unique characers, funny and touching, Every Living Thing is a heart-warming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain’s best-loved authors.

Critic reviews

Bulls with sunstroke, pigs on the run and a cake-eating Peke with a betting habit . . . I grew up reading James Herriot’s book and I’m delighted that thirty years on they are still every bit as charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were then (Kate Humble)
Herriot’s enchanting tales of life in the Dales are deservedly classics. Full of extraordinary characters, animal and human, the books never fail to delight (Amanda Owen, bestselling author of The Yorkshire Shepherdess)

simply wonderful

I read the originals in my early teens and very much enjoyed them. 40+ years on I've been watching the
2020 on series and really enjoyed these. Nicholas Ralph an inspired. choice as James Herriot and narration of the audiobooks. for me he is Mr Herriot. I've bought the series and regularly listen to them. the characters are bought to life by Ralph's brilliant voice over and these are good for the soul.
Cannot reccomend them enough.

Such a cosy listen

Nicholas Ralph is a simply magnificent narrator. I am so sorry this is the last book in the series. I shall miss these bucolic tales.

Another great audiobook by Herriot & Ralph

Great stories: sad, funny, nostalgic, educational - there is everything there, and superb performance by Mr. Ralph. I love this series.

Such a shame.

Pathetic and cringeworthy attempts at different Yorkshire accents totally spoil this audiobook.
Really really terrible.

my very least favourite of all

I dont think this book should ever have been written. Nowhere near as good as the others and nowhere near enough stories of the vets farmers and animals which make up so much of the humour of the others. I didn't find it funny, and that's a first and as for Helen if she really was a farmers daughter she must be the weakest and most woke I've ever come across especially so for a Yorkshire lass and I can only assume this was publishers pandering instructions. I wish I'd never bought this it totally spoils the series and I'll be returning.
