About this listen

Noclip in, no way out ...

All Dan wants is to find a way home. He'd settle for a beer, a bite to eat, and a place to sleep off his hangover.

But, in an endless, ever-changing dungeon cobbled together from twisted carnivals, abandoned shopping malls, janky laundromats, and condemned insane asylums, getting a bit of shut-eye is harder than it sounds.

Dan has accidentally "Noclipped" into the Backrooms—a bizarro, extra-dimensional Alice-in-Wonderland world, overrun with horrific nightmare creatures known as the Dwellers. No one ever gets out. Hell, forget about leaving, if Dan wants to survive the week, he's going to need to harness the strange game-like magic of the Backrooms, make some very sketchy allies, and carve out a little safe haven to call his own.

And he's going to need to do it fast because Dan is being hunted. The Flayed Monarch of the 999th floor has marked him for death and no one walks away from the Skinless Court with their hide intact ...

“The book is a f***ing delight. I enjoyed the absolute hell out of it and think it's an excellent use of pop culture to make something fun and horrific and awesome.” (Eric Ugland, author of the Good Guys and Bad Guys series)

“Buckle up, buttercup! James Hunter takes you on a balls-to-the-wall adventure that's as insane as it is awesome.” (Jez Cajiao, author of the Arise and Rise of Mankind series)

"Discount Dan is a fun, fast-paced read with awesome game mechanics, surprising humor, and a brutal adventure you won’t want to put down!" (Dakota Krout, author of Completionist Chronicles, Full Murder Hobo, and The Divine Dungeon)

horrifying and hilarious

this is my first review but I've listened to my fair share of lit RPGs this is a gem if you're into horror and the back rooms of all things this is for you I also find the power system very entertaining give it a go you won't be disappointed

Great premise but seriously flawed

I have listened to a fair bit of LitRPG and more often than not most suffer from similar problems. They all have great premises but are usually rushed in their execution of getting to the core idea. The other glaring problem is the amount of time that's given to endlessly explaining stats progression, comparing gear and ability effects. Discount Dan is no different. 70% of the book is just a discussion on what abilities and gear do.

But that's not even the biggest problem with this book.
SLIGHT SPOILER WARNING FOR BEGINNING.

The biggest issue here is that Dan seemingly never cares that's he's ended up in world between worlds. After the first chapter he doesn't once consider getting home nor does he panic about his new dire situation. he just accepts it. No curiosity about the The Backrooms and why they exist, no slow decent into madness at the thought of losing everything he ever knew, just acceptance and the compulsion to set up shop.

I'm not going to make the obvious comparison to Dungeon Crawler Carl because it's hard to write LitRPG books without treading on similar themes but what makes DCC great is the evolution of the character. Carl is nervous and distraught at losing everything in the first book, leading to less than optimal decisions and erratic behaviour. But over the course of the series, Carl's character evolves into a more resentful one and he becomes slowly more unhinged at the realisation nothing is going back to the way it was.

To summarise for those familiar with DCC, this book is like Carl going down the stairs to the dungeon, thinking nothing of it and opening a shop to help other crawlers.

The narration is the saving grace here. Great performance and voice work. If this review sounds salty it's because I liked the premise but it's just rushed and the main character sucks.
