Summary

The planet of Caliban exists much as it has for thousands of years - the knightly orders protect the common people, fighting back the beasts that lurk in the depths of the seemingly endless forests.

Young Zahariel and Nemiel aspire to join the greatest of the orders, led by the example of mighty Lion El'Jonson and his vision of a peaceful and unified world. But the coming of the Imperium brings new concerns and a new destiny for the Lion as part of the Great Crusade, and the sons of Caliban must decide if they will follow him to glory among the stars.

Unexpected in the series but enjoyable nonetheless

As most have said, I don't see how it connects to the Horus heresy story but it certainly provides some context on one of the Primarks, his origins and the origins of the death Angels. It may play a part further down the line

Not the best so far.

Whilst a good story in the unfolding saga of the heresy, I feel this story just didn’t have the grab I felt with the previous 5. And whilst I understand not every book will be an absolute hit, I do feel this one could have been better.
For completionists it’s essential, for dark angels fans too I guess, but I think I could have missed it and not been hugely bothered. The previous entries I’ll listen to again. This one… perhaps not.

History of Caliban!

You can skip this book if you want to continue reading about the main storyline of the Horus Heresy unless i missed something i didnt come across anything relative to it , lots of background on the Dark Angels and Caliban but there wasn't enough action for me , the story was weak especially the second part. The Narrator was very good but the voice acting for some of the characters was very annoying and kinda took away from the story.

it has everything

the character development for luther is, of course simple but the way its done is excellent, the brotherhood and companionship shown between thr brothers as a clear paralle to luther and thr lion

A welcome gear shift

A step back in time and a focus shift onto one of the most enigmatic legions. This book gives a fascinating peek behind the curtain to the Dark Angels early years, its people, its traditions and in turn, how they translate into being facets of their legion culture. The stage and scope has been set up to Book 5 'Fulgrim', now its time to witness the more solemn and quiet moments and events that take place whilst the grandiose and epic story of Horus' rebellion unfolds. Great work Mitchell, and a good performance. A 4 star review overall as (to some) this story might seem like a sudden and abrupt gear change. But it is a welcome experience for me and I know many Dark Angel fans will love this book.
