Summary
A new race rules Earth, and they are brutal.

A decent story but longwinded
This book has a good story, even quite unique in some instances but it is very long winded. Multiple times I wished the author would condense the narrative as it definitely went on for longer than was necessary, especially the big reveal at the end. I liked the story up until some of the humans escaped with Luke but thereafter it went downhill for me, which is a shame as I was rooting for it. The big reveal had such a long explanation at the end that when everything was explained and you could put the puzzle pieces together I didn't really care, it was lacklustre.

Promising beginning but lost focus
The beginning was exciting and interesting, but it felt like the story lost focus and went on a few tangents that didn’t really add anything. The last half felt like the moment where the evil villain describes his dastardly plot in great detail, except it wasn’t the kind of plot twist you get in that sort of scenario. The narrator changes their accents and voice for each character which is actually very useful and works well to help differentiate them at the beginning when you’re just learning who each is, but it’s at such a slow pace that I had to speed it up to 1.5. The ending was anticlimactic and disappointing but the idea behind it was interesting. I think it’s the right universe and that a different story told within it would be more interesting, but as it was none of the characters apart from Killard were likeable so I dont see the point in the ending.
