Summary
In a future where the human race has split into three species, the mentally evolved Illuminatos have conquered the other two in a brutal Evolutionary War. Now, the seven most powerful Illuminatos, the Council, control the Earth, ruling over the other two human species through violent oppression.
As one of the defeated physically evolved Corporis, Samara lost everything: her family, her freedom, and her will to fight. But when her master, Lord Wyatt Faraday, commands her to find the mysterious leader of the Resistance, Tristan, everything she thought she knew is challenged.
Tristan is an Illuminatos who has turned his back on his own kind to follow his principles. An idealist hoping to restore peace and equality for all species, he cannot escape his past, and it may force him to make a terrible choice.
Their meeting will change the world, but will it be for the better?
Critic reviews
"Not only masterfully penned with a natural and addictive flow to the story, but also socially commentative, wildly unpredictable, and undeniably entertaining." (Self-Publishing Review)

Rekindling the Human Capacity for Love
Set on a dystopian future earth, The Drift introduces us to a fractured humanity. Three different varieties of humans, some enhanced, others 'unevolved', have been locked in an enduring war. The earth has been ravaged and the population has crashed. You would expect a bleak read from here onwards, but Aufenthie never denies us glimmers of hope throughout.
The pov characters include an emotionally-wounded assassin and an idealist close to breaking-point. While the romantic aspect of the story becomes clear early on, and I anticipated its trajectory, I could not predict each twist and turn along the way. The emotions are raw here, you quickly sink into each pov character's consciousness. The characters work hard for each victory and there are few convenient plot devices to usher them along. I found the worldbuilding and political system fascinating and hope to learn more about them in the next book.
I enjoyed the snappy dialogue, and each characters' voice is easy to identify. The pacing is deftly handled, but you may need to schedule some time to process the ending. It made me feel many things at once.
