About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Marooned in a sprawling farmhouse in Norfolk, teenage Linda Radlett feels herself destined for greater things. She longs for love, but how will she ever find it? She can't even get a signal on her mobile phone. Linda's strict, former rock star father terrifies any potential suitors away, while her bohemian mother, wafting around in silver jewellery, answers Linda's urgent questions about love with upsettingly vivid allusions to animal husbandry.

Eventually Linda does find her way out from the bosom of her deeply eccentric extended family and moves to London to become a model. She knows she doesn't want to marry 'a man who looks like a pudding', as her good and dull sister Louisa has done, and marries the flashy, handsome son of a UKIP peer instead. But her new life is unromantic: darker, wilder and more complicated than she expected.

Then one day, at her lowest ebb, Linda spontaneously boards the Eurostar to Paris. There she is swept up in a feverish love affair that will upend her life completely.

A razor-sharp, laugh-out-loud novel that re-imagines the cast of Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love.

Lovely clever re telling

A lovey and very clever retelling of a long treasured story, only a little too pleased with itself and deservedly so! Narration was perfect

Nancy Mitford retold as a Jilly Cooper

The original story by Nancy Mitford is a firm favorite of mine and India Knight has made an entertaining re-boot. Uncle Matthew is now a aged rock star rather than a lord etc, Linda a model/cook- Knight's observations and details are good and she could step into the shoes of Jilly Cooper, writing funny, slightly sexy stories of fancy folk. Sophie Winkleman reads charmingly.

Delightful retelling of a classic

I was initially nervous about this retelling of one of my favourite novels, but I was won over. Charming and beautifully read! It lacks the acerbic wit of Mitford's original, but that would be hard to emulate and it is very funny in places. Because it doesn't have the hard edge of the original I actually found the ending more moving. Overall a very enjoyable listen.

5* Modern Romantic Magic

Fall madly and deeply into the marvelous and magical world of this fascinating family. A witty and current take on a traditional story. It will stay with you forever. I wish I could read it all over again for the first time.

Better than the original!

I was full of trepidation coming to this modern take on the Mitford original but I can honestly say each moment was a pure delight. As witty and charming as Pursuit of Love but updated so that the characters were relatable and relevant, with a subtle awareness of class and privilege that the original lacked.

An absolute gem!

Good

Rather a sudden ending was not expecting it - must’ve been enjoying it too much and didn’t notice

Superb homage to Love in a Cold Climate

This was like the perfect gin & tonic; refreshing, zingy and fun. And Sophie Winkelman’s performance was just right for the novel.
