Summary

Even as a young girl, Jill was a favorite of the magical, mysterious Wildfolk, who appeared to her from their invisible realm. Little did she know her extraordinary friends represented but a glimpse of a forgotten past and a fateful future. Four hundred years - and many lifetimes ago - one selfish young lord caused the death of two innocent lovers. Then and there he vowed never to rest until he'd righted that wrong - and laid the foundation for the lives of Jill and all those whom she would hold dear: her father, the mercenary soldier Cullyn; the exiled berserker Rhodry Maelwaedd; and the ancient and powerful herbman Nevyn, all bound in a struggle against darkness...and a quest to fulfill the destinies determined centuries ago.

Here in this newly revised edition is the incredible novel that began one of the best-loved fantasy series in recent years - a tale of bold adventure and timeless love, perilous battle, and pure magic. For long-standing fans of Deverry and those who have yet to experience this exciting series, Daggerspell is a rare and special treat.

Love the Celtic overtones of this series.

I’m a massive fan of the deverry series. I have read most of the books. I enjoyed listening to the book but did find the performance mildly of putting due to poor accents. But overall I enjoyed it.

Get 4 titles together 👌

Bought this by accident as had read the 4 titles in ine credit. So thought I was getting another story from the same characters. I was disappointed because I loved it so much I didn't want it to end. Brill took me to another time and place for a break from reality 😉☺

One of my all time favourites on Audible!

The whole story draws you in almost from the beginning. The characters develop over many stories. Nevyn is such a fantastic idea. Living for hundreds of years to fix a problem he created. I can't wait for the other books to come. I bought the first four when I saw them become available. The narrator is a woman, I read these books with a male voice in my head. When I started listening, I was concerned that it wouldn't be as good but I have quickly come round to enjoying the narration. Everyone I recommended to these novels loved them, I recommend them now.

excellent sword and sorcery

A series I have read many times so enjoying the different format. some pronunciations are jarring but that's probably because I would skip the pronunciation guide! on to the next one...

Epic stories the way they're meant to be!

I first read this book back in 2003 and struggled to get to grips with it, but I'm so very glad I did.
The first book is always the hardest to read, but this goes on to weave a fantastic tale of travel, magic, lost love and secrets.

It seemlessly goes back and forth a 400 year time line around key figures and people they've known. Betrayal, lust, abandonment and sacrifice.

The only thing I have had to come to grips with is the pronounceation of the reader in the way she says names and places, but to be fair I pronounced what I thought was right, so it'll sound different when someone else reads..

If you're a fan of fantasy fiction then this series, yes series of books is certainly one you should have in your collection... I have and I can wait for the rest of the collection to on Audible..

Enjoy!

Evocative, atmospheric fantasy

The story of Jill, a mercenary's daughter born to the dweomer (magic), opens the first book in the atmospheric Deverry series. but it isn't the start of the story.

That begins in a past life 400 years earlier, when her lover abandons her to a dreadful fate. Nevyn the Dweomermaster lives on, bound by a vow that he won't rest until he has healed the souls he harmed as they are reincarnated over and over again.

Daggerspell is a warm, muktilayered story that manages to blend emotional intelligence with great action sequences and rich world building.

a classic fantasy. Well told and a great listening

The narrator was a bit too slow for my liking so I had to speed it up just a smudge. Other than that it was highly enjoyable. Recommend

Love these books - read them when they first came out

I’m a huge fan of Katherine Kerr and read the books
25 years ago. Listening to them now still captured my imagination.
It’s well narrated if a little flat at times but the story carries it along.
