Bit political

Loved the story but did feel it got very into political tangent at times that were a bit long winded for my taste

Great listen

Kept me gripped as Chris Brookmyre usually does. Set firmly in the 90’s but trips always no at a great pace. Odd to remember a time when mobile phones were quite glamorous

Weegie Bias

This was quite slow, but I can't help liking Brookmyre books for the feelings of home the Glasgow accent gives. It's the only accent with multiple swearing that seems right as that is how a true ned banters!

Robbers on the run are accused of murder and it's up to Jack and a newbie solicitor to prove their innocence.

Fantastic audiobook with excellent narration

This was a pleasure to listen to, and in many ways a spooky, if worrying, kick in the teeth to modern politics. Why? Because it was written nearly 25 years ago, and many of a visceral points being made about politicians - especially the Tories - remain worryingly true. This book really shows we never learn from past mistakes.
The characters are fantastic, and Spammy is definitely one the best.
I like Parlabane as a character and the fact that he acts outside the law, but remains our hero, reminds me of Simon Kernick's Ray Mason.

If I had one criticism of this book it would be that as much as I thoroughly enjoyed the political ranting, there were times when it went on a little too long and I wanted to action to move forwards. Angus King once again expertly delivers a narration second to none and I look forward to listening to more.

Love it

I read this in paperback, years ago and having really enjoyed it, decided to go for the audiobook, and wasn’t disappointed.

I’m not totally convinced by the narrator, but the plot and dialogue is - in my opinion - great.

Excellent Story

I absolutely love Chris Brookmyre’s writing!! I’ve just got into the Jack Parlabane series and am as happy and impressed as with everything else I’ve read of his work. My only disappointment is with the narrator. Overall, his accents, differentiation between characters voices, etc, are good and make it easy to follow who’s speaking. The two problems I had were 1) he frequently put the emphasis on the wrong word and 2), most annoyingly, he appeared to add his own commas! There were times when I had to rewind and make my own sense of what the writer intended, due to one, or the other, or a combination of these irritations. I see the same narrator continues, so I hope he relaxes into it a bit more.

Wonderfully funny.

I really enjoyed this book. And I thought Angus King's narration absolutely terrific. I enjoyed that it wasn't just a whodunnit - quite soon we know whodiddit - and we hear various angles on the story. Which I enjoy much more than the more normal convolusion of finding out the whodiddit.
Yes, it's one of the James Bond type things where you know the goody will survive. But it is extremely funny and I just adored the character called Spammy.
I did find the earlier parts a bit confusing but stuck with it. I'm so glad I did. I shall definitely be listening to more Christopher Brookmyre. Good comic writing is a very difficult art. Christopher Brookmyre is up to the challenge.
