Summary
Now including new bonus chapter exclusive to this audiobook
A gut punch of a memoir by a doctor - and comedian - whose job is to keep people alive by putting them to sleep.
Ed Patrick is an anaesthetist.
Strong drugs for his patients, strong coffee for him. But it's not just sleep-giving for this anaesthetist, as he navigates emergencies, patients not breathing for themselves and living with a terrifying sense of responsibility. It's enough to leave anyone feeling numb.
But don't worry, there's plenty of laughing gas to be had.
Critic reviews
"It's funny, touching and gobsmacking in equal measure. At its heart is a breathtaking account of life on the COVID frontline." (Jay Rayner)
"Ed's journey is funny, sad, harrowing, hilarious.... I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO READ THIS." (Colin Mochrie)

Doctors notes
Delightful rendition of the anaesthetic doctors role, during normal times and Covid.
Very candid and informative as Dr Patrick talks about his personal life in and out if the hospital both funny and embarrassing moments.
If you like Adam Kay, you will certainly like this.

Good enough story
Comprehensive story of his route to and through NHS medicine before and during covid.
Would have been better if i hadn’t listened to The Gas Man first which i found to be more comprehensive

A great listen
A funny and entertaining read with some genuine laugh out loud moments. However, written with compassion and empathy and the right level of insight and information.
I like that it was narrated by Ed himself. What a genuine and lovely guy he is. All NHS staff are total heroes.

Detailed and insightful
This audiobook has really opened my eyes to a branch of medicine I knew little about apart from being on the table being asked to count back from ten!

brilliant, honest and important
love the pace, the story and the reflection on medicine and the pandemic - so often people don't think of doctors as people: so this touchingly candid account of Eds route in medicine and finding his niche and experiencing a once in a lifetime crisis like covid 19 is a must read for anyone who has ever wondered what its like to walk a mile in doctors (probably bodily fluid stained) shoes

Hilarious and heart breaking
Literally giggling at the gym. I knew the story telling would be good because I love Ed Patrick’s stand up comedy, but the book has legit blown me away. Such a fascinating period of time told through a very human first hand view point.

brilliant and funny in the midst of a tragedy
I loved this book. It spoke from the bottom of my heart and moved me to tears as I am a retired GP. We need humour to face all the tragedy in a doctors life. I hope Ed will continue his good work and wont succum to the shortcomings of the NHS. He brought across how rewarding and deeply sad it can be to try to do your best for your patients and how important your team is. Keep up the good work for all of us who cant anymore for whatever reason! I hope Ed will make sure that he does not end up with burnout or worse like so many.
At least you could be a brilliant writer and narrator!
