Dan Abnett
Dan Abnett is the master.
I was stuck on less well written 40k books, Dan Abnett and Toby Longworth were like a beam of light. the story is just so well written, the characters so likeable. It just works.

A brotherhood of success
A unique warhammer novel that has a great host of interesting characters with a rich history. Seldom do you see an author go to such lengths to flesh out a space marine chapter. This story is a great example of Chekhov’s gun and this literary technique kept me engaged and surprised (in a good way) at how these segmented conflicts and plot threads became entwined and came full circle.

Probably the best 40k I've read
This was the first 40k book I bought and read, and it got me into the Warhammer 40k Universe.
Still an amazing read and I highly recommend it.

Holds up well
Some oddly ham-fisted gender politics aside, this is a solid offering from Abnett. Well worth a listen.

Dynamic immersive space marines story from Abnett
Dynamic, immersive action combined with a great sense of mood and characterisation. Abnett writes space marines as more 3-dimensional than usual. Hampered by occasional logic gaps (such as endless Ork hordes politely lining up to attack from the front). The thrust of the story still rises above such foibles, making for a great read.

A story with heart
Some of the stories in this realm are full of sound and thunder but have very little heart. This has its share of epic action but is driven by characters that you care about, a strong narrative drive and pleasing subtleties that make you want to keep listening. What more could you want?
