Simple concept for recovery....at last!

It was so easily explained how we can rewire our own brains that I almost feel stupid for not seeing it sooner. A really good book that has sparked something in me to believe I can kick years of BED. I would highly recommend this book

The missing piece of the puzzle


I cannot believe I sit here to write a review on a book that has seemingly solved my overeating problem. I feel like I am waking up from some kind of bad dream. I woke up excited for the first time since I can remember. I am 44 and since I was about 21 I have tried every diet, lost weight, put it all back on and currently 3 or 4 stone over weight. I went to therapy, hypnosis, acupuncture, read every self help book I could find to solve my problem. I found this book mentioned on a reddit comment about binaural beats, and someone said this book was a game changer.

Funnily enough my audible credit had just gone on and I thought I would give it a go, what had a I got to lose (well.....3 or 4 stone!). I was worried because the author writes about her bulimia, whether it would work for me. I wasn't so much a binger, just eat way more than I need, and eat to feeling super full, then the minute I didn't feel full I would start snacking. I would eat a massive junk food takeaway to cheer myself up after a bad day. I was a self proclaimed emotional eater. I don't know if this is bingeing really but all the same I listened to the book, daring to hope all the reviews were right.

I have listened to 3 hours so far, and I have stopped over eating. This is decades of habit, gone. I have stopped thinking about food all the time. I am eating three normal meals a day and no snacking. I feel calm around food instead of anxious. I am not even stressing about what I should and shouldn't eat from all the silly diets I have tried. I am beginning to reconnect with my normal hunger. It's like I have been reset to when I was younger and used to eat normally and be a healthy weight. I don't think about food that much now. It doesn't occupy my mind anywhere near as much as it did. I have lived my life on pause for so long, waiting to lose weight so I can date/start a business/wear a dress etc etc etc. I feel a sense of relief, and excitement of what may be possible for myself without the self loathing and feeling completely out of control with food.

I feel immense gratitude to this brave and articulate author. If you can relate to anything I have written, please buy this book. It may be the missing part of the jigsaw as it has been for me.

Science based approach to dealing with binge eating

Kathryn’s book is well researched and well written, mixing scientific knowledge with stories of her own experience. It’s been an eye opener to realise that urges to binge don’t have a hidden underlying motive, but are rather a habit. As any bad habit, it takes conscious attention to unlearn, but Kathryn has proved that it is possible.

Life saving

this helped me overcome my binge eating. truly life changing. understanding the information she presents makes you understand that the power to overcome the struggle is lying fully in your choice, in the simplest of ways. she make you see how it's not complicated at all but very simple. no words are enough to express my gratitude

She drones on and on but finally gets there.

I thought this might have some useful insight and she certainly makes big claims. But have listened for days and all I get is her monotone little voice outlining every binge and what every expert told her. She offers zero advice or insight but just uses the book to be boring about herself. It’s like reading someone else’s very boring self obsessed diary. Oh and it’s repetitive too - endlessly repetitive.

Finally finally - by moving the book along to chapter 12, I begin to get the point of the book. Let me explain by using the analogy of a smoker. An addicted smoker craves a cigarette and that craving ONLY goes away when they have a cigarette. But all they are doing is feeding the addiction. They enjoy the cigarette because it’s made the craving go away. Soon after the cigarette is smoked they are going to want another one. And no one will suggest a smoker didn’t get enough love as a child or has low self esteem - the way they will a binge eater. When a smoker gives up - (ok they may use patches or gum) but basically what they do is over ride the desire to smoke with their need to stop. They in effect just stop. Ok so it’s harder because of the nicotine and other components of a cigarette but nevertheless - the animal voice tells them to smoke and presumably the human voice tells them not to. If they resist enough the craving will go. It’s a similar theory here. You have formed a habit (it doesn’t say how it begins?) and now your ‘human’ brain needs to over ride the messages that tell you to binge. It’s interesting and powerful. And has an element of possibility. And it explains why therapy might well not work - after all there is no psychological reason.

I’m adjusting my previous score slightly. It still gets a low score because it takes SO long to get to the point and only really starts to get interesting after hours of listening. I should have skipped ahead far earlier.

Now I find that having got finally to the point she goes on and on at length giving out complicated science very fast. I have slowed her down in my settings but she needs to edit a lot of what she says. She even lets slip that her previous attempts to just NOT binge had been unsuccessful - that’s a blow to anyone thinking they can just decide NOT to binge. (As per her greatest argument). It’s confusing and overly complicated. Could be excellent if massively edited.

Ten hours of my life wasted listening to this

I probably only heard about 8 hours of this incredibly boring audiobook as I kept drifting in and out of consciousness. I still have no idea what the "cure" was or is and I would be grateful if anyone could tell me what chapter to listen to again . Kathryn has a nice speaking voice but is totally wasted by repitition. Why speak 10 sentences when you can pad it out to 500 ?. I'm rather annoyed that I have wasted 10 hours of my life that I can never get back. This was my first audiobook and I can say it is also probably my last. I am puzzled about the number of rave reviews that this audiobook has received - I just don't get it.
