Summary

The islands of Britain and Ireland hold a rich heritage of plant folklore and wisdom, from the magical yew tree to the bad-tempered dandelion. Here are traditional tales about the trees and plants that shape our landscapes and our lives through the seasons. They explore the complex relationship between people and plants, in lowlands and uplands, fields, bogs, moors, woodlands and towns.

Reminds me of the old countryside

A lot of tales are variations of the ones I grew up on. Amazing the author really takes you to these magical places.

A cozy, comforting listen

I listened to the entire thing at work today, and enjoyed how easy it was to drop in and out of as I had to pause occasionally. I learned a lot and could almost dream myself away to the uk

An enjoyable and relaxing listen.

The good: well narrated with a clear voice. Some very interesting stories. Some plants mentioned that I'd never heard of (I studied Botany).

The not-so-good: the pronunciation of some words was very much wrong and, for me, it was like having red hot pokers in my ears! 'Trefoil' is a common term and, really, there's little excuse for an English person to not know its pronunciation. Especially females of a certain age, as the majority of us were Brownies or Guides at some point. There were similar mispronunciations of other words. Not a huge number, just enough that I noticed. Additionally, some of the stories were so tentatively linked to plants that I'd get to the end and not even be sure what plant was mentioned. It was only a few, with the majority being appropriately plant-based. And a couple of the stories were a little too modern!

I listened to the entire book in one evening and will probably buy the physical copy now. It's also inspired me to do some more research into the fairytales and myths surrounding some of our most beloved plants. As this was free at the time oflisteneing, I was most pleased with it and definitely recommend it to anyone who gardens, enjoys British wild plants, or enjoys British folk culture.

Charming stories well told

A lovely collection of short stories, skilfully narrated. Some of the stories are very short and only loosely linked to plants but still worth a listen.

intriguing stories - fantastic narration

wonderful stories for adults and children alike, although some darker than others. It took me back to sitting cross-legged on the story carpet at school (thanks Mrs Bagwell!) Hopefully these stories will inspire writers to write, readers to read, and wildflowers to be loved.

Interesting stories

I rather enjoyed this book. The stories, history and parts of the UK. Being a lover of nature and a learner of medicinal herbs etc, this was an interesting listen.
