About this listen
Three hundred years ago, the settlers on the small Maine island of Sanctuary were betrayed by one of their own, and slaughtered. Now a band of killers has returned to Sanctuary to seek revenge on a young woman and her son, and the only people who stand in their way are a young rookie officer and the island's resident policeman, the troubled giant known as Melancholy Joe Dupree.
But Joe Dupree is no ordinary policeman. He is the guardian of the island's secrets, the repository of its memories. He knows that Sanctuary has been steeped in violence, and that its ghosts will tolerate the shedding of innocent blood no longer. On Sanctuary, the hunters are about to become the hunted.

Surprise
I did enjoy the story, I have read many from the Charlie Parker series. However I felt that some of the voices used by the reader were a little off line. Overall another well researched and well written story

Whete is jeff harding?
I read all JC books but this is not his best
Tho it would likely be much improved if jeff harding was reading it. The story is quite good and Charlie parker does make a cameo appearance but the narration is odd.he has a nice voice.....except wjen he does characters , especial the female rookie.it makes such a difference to the listening experience. So not top marks.

awful narration
The story was extremely enjoyable however the narrator only seems to have three types of voice, whiny female, creepy old man and village idiot. it's a shame Jeff Harding wasn't asked to read this story.

Great book, awful narration.
I Have listened to hundreds of audio books including many John Connolly novels and I can honestly say Hayward Morse is by far the worst voice actor I have ever come across. The plot is really good with well written characters, but the terrible character voices detract from the overall product. If it was re-recorded with a better narrator I’d probably re-buy.

Horrendous Narrator
I’ve read this book before and was excited to listen to the audio book. What I wasn’t prepared for was the terrible narration. The characters accents weren’t even consistent, they changed. This book needs to be re-recorded with a proper narrator.

One of the best, but....
This is actually one of the best Connolly books but the narrator ruins the experience. Actually the narrator is quite good in his own voice but when he puts voices to the characters he makes them sound stupid goofy, like evil children and all the woman sounds like sleasy hookers or posh english woman. Not good but the story is great.

Great book, narration not so great...
loved the story, typical gripping Connolly stuff. Narrator's accents were weird, whiney and inconsistent to the point of distraction 😬 Sorry, maybe trying to hard to be unique.
The feel is that of a Charlie Parker Novel, albeit he only gets a couple of mentions. Still worth a listen for die hard CP Fans.

Different…
Having read the numerous adverse reviews of the narrator of this book I braced myself… and it wasn’t great. Officer Dupree was made to sound like a village idiot, and Officer Macey given a slow semi-English accent that just didn’t gel with her personality. The rest of the cast (poor souls) suffered equal indignities.
But enough of that - the book was OK, complete with a passing reference to Charle Parker of course.
I do agree with others that it should be re-recorded with Jeff Harding as narrator in order to rescue the title.
