About this listen

Kingmaker. Soothsayer. Warrior. Mage. Kingdoms would rise and fall for her...if she is ever found.

In the icy North, where magic is might, an all-powerful elite ruthlessly guided by a glacial Queen have grown to dominate the world. Now rebellion is stirring in the rough, magic-poor South, where for the first time in memory a warlord has succeeded in uniting the tribal nations.

Stuck in the middle is Cat - circus performer and soothsayer - safely hidden behind heavy makeup, bright colours and the harmless illusion of the circus. Until someone suspects she's more than she seems....

Captured by the Southern warlord Griffin, Cat's careful camouflage is wearing thin. For how long can - or should - she conceal the true extent of her power? Faced with dragons, homicidal mages, rival Gods and the traitorous longings of her own heart, she must decide: is it time to claim her destiny and fight?

An award-winning fantasy debut with an unforgettable heroine, set against a luminous world on the brink of battle, this is for those who love Ilona Andrews, Laini Taylor or Victoria Aveyard.

Very good story, let down by over descriptive ....

I really was taken by this story, absolutely loved the characters and the story, I felt very disappointed by the detailed sex scenes, which I felt were really over the top and unnecessary.
The story is excellent, and I bought the second in the series before I fell across the sex, and the second book starts with it in about the second chapter. I am hoping it will quieten down and allow me to enjoy the story - which is excellent- without feeling too voyeuristic.

Loved it

Amazing love story, intrigue, magic and God's. Everything you could want. And a little bit saucy

An easy enjoyable read

Probably the best of the trilogy. Heroine is sometimes quite annoying but nevertheless I find myself interested in what happens to her.
As in the headline - a good read and I went on to buy and listen to the other 2 in the trilogy.

Enjoyable Characters and storyline

shame about the too much too often sex stuff. didn't think it was necessary to be explicit and it ruined my enjoyment of the book in several occasions.

Good idea but not for me

I found this book a bit frustrating. Parts are very slow moving especially at the beginning and I was close to giving up at several parts as it had become boring and didn't seem to be going anywhere. Then all of a sudden it became all about full blown sex and an attempt and making you want the two main characters to be together. I'd already decided by then why on earth would Cat want to be with her captor? A man who is not desirable and at most annoying by never listening and making decisions for her. He wouldn't be with her if she wasn't magic so as far as I can tell that's all he wants from her. I didn't feel like there was any desire leading up to it. The sex in this book is very detailed toward the end and I didn't see the need for it to be that way. I won't be reading the rest. It just annoyed me how things were described the same way using the same terms- I got so fed up hearing 'calibre red' over and over like there is no other shades! The narrator gave a good performance but her performance of Griffin made me instantly not like the character and added to the annoyance of the way he spoke to Cat throughout the book.

This has to be one of the most understated series

I bloody love this series so much and what makes it above the rest is the narrator. I wish she would narrate more! Now to the story I loved not only the main relationship but the relationship with beta team, it is so brilliantly written. It’s funny, fresh and definitely worth the listen (I might have listened to this multiple times)

im gonna have to buy the whole series

think the title says it all. I fell in love with the characters, the way the mythology of our world is threaded through and intertwined with the amazing and colourful world of Cat's life.

it's a fresh take on how the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece could impact the world if they were real enough.

Enjoyable fantasy.

I was drawn into the storyline quickly and became involved. I recommend this for adults though, as there are tasteful erotic scenes towards the end of the book (an echo of "Fifty Shades" LOL, which I couldn't finish reading - it was not written well I thought) but this is not a negative criticism. It suits the story. This is the first in a trilogy and I have already purchased the second, I really want to find out what happens next and am already up to chapter 5, and we have more "shades", so be prepared. if you don't like to read erotica, I suggest you don't purchase this book. Otherwise, enjoy the escapism.

Good but not great

I did enjoy this book and might listen to the rest of series but I won't rush. The general storyline is good with some great characters but it's a bit slow with a lot of repetition. Also I'm not sure who it's aimed at, G.O.T, LOTR or 50 shades readers. It could have been great if paced a little quicker but still worth a read.
