About this listen

Witness the fate of beloved heroes and notorious foes in the heart-stopping conclusion to V.E. Schwab's New York Times best-selling Shades of Magic trilogy.

The precarious equilibrium among the four Londons has reached its breaking point. Once brimming with the red vivacity of magic, darkness casts a shadow over the Maresh Empire, leaving a space for another London to rise.

Kell begins to waver under the pressure of competing loyalties. Meanwhile, an ancient enemy returns to claim a crown and a fallen hero is desperate to save a decaying world.

Critic reviews

“A Darker Shade of Magic is smart, funny and sexy...and Schwab keeps the excitement coming with roller-coaster plot twists that establish her as, perhaps, the natural successor to Diana Wynne Jones's contemporary fantasy crown.” (The Independent)

Really enjoyable series

I very much enjoyed the series. All 3 books told a decent chunk of the story so no need to drag it out to 4 or 5 like some fantasy novelists. Author was new to me so I’ll try some more. The narrator wasn’t annoying to me so try the sample and see for yourself before letting that put you off.

Fast paced & gripping

For me, this was the best installment in the shades of magic trilogy. It was immediately gripping and filled with action, without losing plot or character development. I also loved how much darker than the previous books this one felt, with elements I would describe as horror woven in seamlessly. This final installment made the slight drop in pace of the second book worth it, with the groundwork and context of the prequel allowing this book to dive into an amazing final story arc.

Great ending to the series

I enjoy all VE Schwab's book and this series has been no different, she's a great story teller. Going from the reviews she's not everyone's cup of tea and that's fine, we all have our own likes and dislikes. It's a YES from me 👌🏻

Wonderful story

A wonderful trilogy that I’ll listen to again and again... as long as I can focus on the story and not the truly dreadful narration. There’s a red London, a grey London and a white London but no American London,so why use American narrators? To make matters worse, the two narrators make each of the characters sound completely different, which is ridiculous! Despite this, the story is absorbing and I will definitely listen to more from this author.

Let down by narrator

The male voice was impossibly off-putting and the story itself could do with some judicious pruning but there is a lot to enjoy in this book. Probably better read than listened to, at least in this rendition.

perfect ending to a great series

Amazing narration from the duo who did the stormlight archives and the rest of the cosmere books.

The writing is incredible and the story is heart racing and captures your attention from start to finish. Another serues I'm sad to finish.

Great ending to a really fun series.

Schwab is now one of my favourite authors, I like her characters and love the way she weaves a story. This was a fitting ending to the shades of magic series and I hope we'll get some other stories from this world in the future.
There is one bit of torture in this book that I couldn't listen to but I just skipped to the next chapter and it was gone. It was from a characters past that we knew about so I already knew it was coming and didn't feel that I needed to listen to it.

Great narration again from the two narrators I'm used to their accents now so they fitted the book well.

Excellent conclusion to a fabulous trilogy!

I enjoyed this book as much as the earlier ones. The narration was excellent, especially having a male and a female narrator combination. The story arc came to a conclusion that neatly tied everything and everyone together. The three books make for wonderful listening as an escape to magical worlds of good and evil. It’s more grown up than Harry Potter but just as much fun. Well worth listening to the series.
