About this listen
"This isn’t how I pictured my life, you know? It was going to be fabulous. I was going to be fabulous.”
Meet Charlie; unfulfilled and perimenopausal, Charlie’s suburban life is a far cry from the Manhattan glamour she once dreamed of. Her husband is incapable of talking about anything other than his latest Ironman challenge, her sex life consists of fictional encounters with Hollywood stars, her kids need constant man-management, and to make things worse, her optician has just prescribed her reading glasses.
Oh, and she can’t stop crying at TV adverts…
In the hope of re-discovering her sense of self, Charlie begins writing a list: 45 things to do before she’s 45.
- Eat an oyster
- Take up parkour
- Read War and Peace
- Take ecstasy
- Try stand-up comedy
- Go to a sex club
Determined to complete them all, Charlie embarks on a chaotic odyssey through her own spectacular midlife crisis, challenging herself to become the person she wants to be. But what happens if we’re not that person? How do we learn to let them go? Or does something else have to give?
Uproariously funny and deeply human, 45 Things… is an all-too relatable story of what it means to be alive and how much living we all still have to do.
Narrated by the inimitable Isy Suttie (Peep Show), 45 Things... is the perfect listen for fans of Dolly Alderton, Caitlin Moran and Marian Keyes.
"There is so much to relate to. I can guarantee that if you're a woman and over thirty, you'll be nodding and laughing along!” – Laura Pearson, author of The Last List of Mabel Beaumont

Fun story, irritating narration
I enjoyed the story but found the narrator’s voice so irritating. Because of this I couldn’t finish the book and am glad it was a freebie

Raucous good fun
I quickly abandoned all my plans and worldly commitments after just a couple of chapters so that I could fully commit myself to listening. I had the BEST time.

Funny, realistic, and poignant
I ADORED this story! From the extremely realistic opening (40 something mum waking with a hangover under siege from nerf guns) I was completely drawn in by Charlie and her quest to rediscover who she was. I giggled at her mishaps, nodded in recognition at her frustrations with domestic life, and cried for her trying to find the person she wants to be while not really being sure what happened to the person she once was. Loved every minute and couldn’t listen to it fast enough!

Midlife crisis never sounded so fun.
A hilarious and heartwarming book about the strange and often unexplored period of middle age for women. I devoured this book the week before I turn 45. I won’t be following the list- for my own and everyone else’s safety! Great writing, great narration, highly recommend.

Great for a girly laugh!
I don’t normally listen to novels but fancied something light hearted to listen to on holiday and this absolutely ticked the boxes.
I do feel it got a little flat towards the end but overall I couldn’t put my headphones away, had me in lots of laughs and I felt as if I were in the story.
I would recommend

Isy Sutie is outstanding!
The book itself is ok, Isy brings it to life. She is absolutely amazing.

Main character was annoying
I loved the beginning of this book but the main character soon started to irritate me. She was extremely self centred and selfish and it took a long time for her to rectify this, this was frustrating to read and I felt for her friends having someone like that in their friendship group. This read made me realise that I much prefer books with relatable main characters.

Funny and relatable
Enjoyed this! The writing is witty and the narrator does a good job. Lots that felt very relatable as a person of a certain age!

Life, real life
Very entertaining, must be close to the truth for someone. Really enjoyed the humor and fairly normal life of the main character.

Was painful at times
I get that the main character was supposed to be insufferable at points in the story, but it would have been better if she’d realised this a lot sooner. I listened to the end but it was really difficult at points because she was so horrible, and not in a humorous way.
