I was born in Australia - Tasmania to be specific - and studied there and at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. After being the first Prize Fellow specialising in English literature to be elected to All Souls College, Oxford, I went on to teach at Christ Church, Oxford until 2011. I now divide my time between London, Lisbon and New York. I have written 25 books on a variety of subjects - literature, opera, cinema and American culture - and since the 1970s have been a contributor to The Observer.
