Kathy Laurenhue, M.A., C.H.P., is CEO (Chief Enthusiasm Officer) of Wiser Now, Inc., a multi-media publishing and staff development company focused on wellbeing in aging that aims to be practical and lighthearted in everything it produces. That means that a course on continence care for people living with dementia began by noting, “We can’t be anal about this.” Over the last 25+ years, Kathy has produced nearly a hundred webinars and online courses as well as other consulting services for a variety of clients in the U.S. and Australia. She has written five books and more than a thousand brain-stimulating activities in the form of trivia quizzes, word games, discussion topics, and reminiscence/imaginative exercises that are available in (and can be adapted to) multiple formats. All are meant to inform and entertain, not test participants, because Kathy’s goal is always to help people make new connections in their brains and new connections with one another through socializing over her content. While most of the above has been aimed at older adults, Kathy is a family-friendly content provider. Younger people may not know the Doo-wop singers and other events of the 1950s, but they’ll do just fine with most of the exercises. Even an exercise that asks you to name ten 3-letter body parts, specifically notes that no word for “bottom” is on the answer list. Fun fact: Kathy is an active member of AATH (Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor), an organization whose members have diverse interests. In her case, it means she avoids clown noses and rubber chickens, but is fond of Groucho glasses and loves live baby chicks – and ducks; they’re funny, too.
