While I worked in law enforcement for most of my adult life, I have never wanted my job to define me. I am first a Christian, then a thankful husband, a proud father, and a delighted grandpa. Throughout my career, I have tried to embrace the Christian values of justice, mercy, and humility. Room 1203 is written as a true crime story about the investigation leading to O.J. Simpson's conviction for armed robbery. I included some related police anecdotes and a few of my failures to highlight ups and downs of modern law enforcement. It is my hope this book honors my faith and the professions of law enforcement. Because this book is in the true crime genre, I believe my experience in law enforcement does become important. My law enforcement career started when I enlisted in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps. I served at Ft. Gordon, GA; Baumholder, Germany; and various bases throughout Bosnia in 1996. I got out of the Army 1998, and within a few months, I was hired as a Police Officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. I had an incredibly fortunate career. I received my first detective assignment just four years after being hired. I quickly rose through the detective hierarchy getting assigned to the Robbery Section within a year of making detective. This was not the pinnacle for detective work, but it was close. While assigned to the Robbery Section, I had the opportunity to work on multiple high-profile cases that ended up on television. Cases I worked ended up being featured on shows like CourtTV, America’s Most Wanted, and Dateline. I was a Robbery Detective when I was assigned the investigation resulting in O.J. Simpson being sentenced to prison for 15-33 years. After serving as a Robbery Detective for five years, I was fortunate enough to get assigned to LVMPD’s Criminal Intelligence Section and work on the FBI Political Corruption Task Force. After retiring from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, my family and I moved to the Pacific Northwest. I am passionate about my faith and I love to engage in discussions about how Christians can serve in the criminal justice system and embrace the concept of accountability. I also love spending time with my family and enjoying the outdoor activities in the northwest. There is no way I can write a biography about myself without pointing to my wife, Cein Caldwell (Maas). She is my best friend and a treasured gift from God. I am grateful for her strength and support. We have three kids, Rebekah, McKenzie, and Owen. Each one of them gives me reason to be thankful for being in their lives; they are constant reminders of what a remarkable mother my wife is to them. My oldest daughter is married to her husband, Jason Knoble, and they have given us two perfect grandchildren, Avery and Oliver. And I’m a Dodgers fan!
