Eighteen-year-old Brie Melrose is just a normal girl living in Outer Haven with the rest of her kind. Growing up in an orphanage, Brie never knew her parents, and her life was always destined to be simple. One day, a routine job turns into something much more, and Brie finds herself under the watchful eye of the Savants, the highest order of the Enhanced, blessed with supreme intellect and who consider emotions to be pointless. Soon, as threats she never even knew existed begin to close in, Brie learns that her world, and the city of Haven, isn't quite what she thought it was.

Standing in the church outside of the city, Brie is still in shock. She has a brother, a twin. She isn't alone after all.... Her world is changing fast. And soon, it'll be her turn. As her powers begin to manifest and her training begins, Brie finds herself trying to juggle her changing body with her mission. A mission that she doesn't truly understand. Soon, however, the truth of what she's been tasked to do will dawn. And as another attack from the Fanatics rocks the city, Brie finds herself drawn into making a terrible choice.

Waking on the edge of the lake, out beyond the perimeter wall, Brie has to think fast. She's lost, alone, and surrounded by toxic mist. And soon enough, she'll have other threats to contend with too. Needing to get back to the city fast, she sets her sights on the High Tower, the beacon that calls her home. And eventually, it's right to the summit that she needs to go. But first, she's got other business to attend to, business that will take her from the core of Inner Haven to the northern reaches of the underlands.

Brie has finally married Adryan. She's finally made it to the High Tower. And now, there's nothing to do but complete her mission. Surrounded by enemies, she soon finds that she has very few friends in her new home. And within a single day of arriving, she's facing tests of her new powers that will make or break the mission. As tensions begin to boil over in both Outer, and Inner, Haven, events transpire that might just make her job even harder. And with no one else to help, it's down to her, and her new husband, to find a way to the summit.
