Whilst the notion of the Mystic East and Oriental wisdom was greatly romanticised by the Victorians and others, the shadow of Colonialism has smudged the view. These great cultures are some of humanity’s earliest, their works, their art some of its most daring and most accomplished. In these 50 poems across 50 poets we hope, at least in part, to rebalance our view of this subject. We begin in the 6th century BC and travel with a poet’s words and eyes across India, China, Persia and many other places in between.

The idea for this podcast came from my personal experience. Having been primarily identified as a person who is not on Instagram. In my channel, I will talk to Instagrammers to understand their perceptions and where they come from! This is my first podcast, please have fun listening and give feedback :)

Conversations with a Mystic Poet

Dictionaries summon up many words, but none fulfill. Love itself is often ethereal, felt but only seen in a glance, a look, a fleeting touch. Better known in the English-speaking world simply as Rúmi, Jalálu'd-Din Muḥammad Balkhi (1207-1273) was a Persian scholar, theologian, and poet. After Omar Khayyam he is probably the most celebrated classical Persian poet and his luminously spiritual verse has been the subject of many notable English translations.

Rumi, claimed as the national poet of Iran, Turkey & Afghanistan had an early life dedicated to scholarly studies. He only started to write poetry after encountering a holy man called Shams whose subsequent death instilled a profound grief in Rumi and an outpouring of many thousands of verses in Persian. He also intrinsically linked with Sufism.

The poetry of great poets such as Rumi and Hafis, masterfully recited in the Persian original by Reza Ghotbi in the German translation by the actress Ulrike Kriener with a warm timbre. Interweaves with music to create an atmospheric overall experience. Mulo Francel, saxophonist of the celebrated world music band Quadro Nuevo, improvises on the icons of European music: Handel, Bach, Schubert, Caccini, Satie. Together with the sensitive pianist Nicole Heartseeker, the melodies will be atmospherically juxtaposed with Persian poetry.
