The Inferno is the first part of The Divine Comedy, Dante’s epic poem describing man's progress from hell to paradise. In it, the author is lost in dark woods, threatened by wild beasts and unable to find the right path to salvation. Notable for its nine circles of hell, the poem vividly illustrates the poetic justice of punishments faced by earthly sinners. Non si conoscono con precisione gli anni di composizione della "Vita nuova", nonostante sia stata presumibilmente allestita tra il 1292 e il 1293. Lo stesso Dante, però, ci testimonia che il testo più antico risale al 1283, quando egli aveva diciotto anni, e che il più tardo risale al giugno del 1291, anniversario della morte di Beatrice. Altri sonetti sono probabilmente assegnabili al 1293 (in ogni caso le poesie non possono essere datate oltre il 1295).

Dante’s Purgatorio follows the pilgrim as he emerges from the grit and grime of Hell, and comes to the shores of sanctification, the mountain where souls are made holy and beautiful. Purgatorio is the second part of The Divine Comedy, Dante's epic poem describing man's progress from hell to paradise. Having escaped the Inferno, Dante and his guide, the classical Roman poet Virgil, ascend out of the underworld to the Mountain of Purgatory on an island on the far side of the world. The mountain has nine terraces, seven of which correspond to the seven deadly sins, and two of which constitute an Ante-Purgatory with the Garden of Eden at the summit.

The sections of heaven are on different planets and stars, the sections of purgatory are divided along the upward journey of a mountain, and the levels of hell are an upside-down funnel composed of seven rings of punishment.
