In this tale, Holmes and his faithful companion Dr. John Watson are told of a curse which haunts the wealthy Dartmoor family of Sir Charles Baskerville. This centuries-old curse manifests itself as a gigantic and ferocious hound that is said to prowl the moors adjacent to the Baskerville estate. When Sir Charles drops dead of fright just outside the moor and the footprints of an enormous hound are discovered nearby, the cry goes out for Holmes to come to Dartmoor and solve the mystery.

An author who kills off his hero in so dramatic a fashion relatively early in that hero’s literary career (and then of course returns him to life in an equally dramatic manner) has, perhaps, little else to offer us in the final stories of his famous character. Dr Watson calls upon Sherlock Holmes in order to wish him a Merry Christmas and finds his friend making an intensive study of a shabby looking hat. Holmes tells Watson that a few nights ago a commissionaire named Peterson had witnessed a gang of roughs assail a drunken man in the street. Peterson rushed forward to help the man but everyone in the group ran off when they saw Peterson’s official uniform. The victim of the attack had dropped his hat and a goose when he ran. Peterson brought the items to Holmes who suggested that Peterson should take the goose home to eat whilst he himself ...

Jabez Wilson, a pawnbroker, consults Holmes about a job, gained only because of his red hair, which took him away from his shop for long periods each day; the job for to simply copy the Encyclopædia Britannica. After eight weeks, he was suddenly informed that the job ended. After some investigation at Wilson's shop, Holmes contacts a police inspector and the manager of a nearby bank. With Watson, they hide in the bank vault and catch two thieves who had dug a tunnel from the shop while Wilson was at the decoy copying job.
