• Day 308 | Ezekiel acts out God's coming wrath | Hebrews 5: Do not fall away
    Nov 4 2023

Day 308 of the Holy Bible One Year CHALLENGE. Ezekiel 4-6 tells the tale of Ezekiel doing some serious performance art to show Israel's impending doom. He lies on his side for hundreds of days, bakes bread over cow dung, and even shaves his head as a dramatic way to say, "Hey, bad times are coming because of all the bad stuff you've done." The people have been off worshiping idols and forgetting their roots, and now they're going to pay the price. God's pretty upset, to put it mildly, and is ready to hand out some serious divine discipline, like a parent who's found their kid drawing on the walls with permanent marker. In Hebrews 5:11-6:12, the writer is basically saying, “Listen up, I have a lot to say about this Jesus-being-a-high-priest business, but it's tough because you're slow to catch on.” He's nudging the readers to grow up in their faith, move beyond the basic teachings about Christ, and dig into the meatier stuff. There's a bit of a warning too – if you fall away after tasting the good stuff God has offered, it's as hard to come back as it is for a scorched field to be green again. But he's not all doom and gloom; he encourages them to be diligent and not lazy, imitate those who through faith and patience inherited God's promises, like inheriting a family recipe and finally getting it right after lots of practice.

  • Day 307 | Ezekiel sees visions from God | Hebrews 4: Jesus the High Priest
    Nov 4 2024

Day 307 of the Holy Bible One Year CHALLENGE. Ezekiel has this wild vision with super complex and vivid images—a storm, creatures with four faces and wings, wheels within wheels, and above all, a throne with a figure glowing like fire. This figure is the glory of God, and He's commissioning Ezekiel to be a prophet. God warns Ezekiel that he's being sent to the Israelites who are stubborn and rebellious, but he must speak God's words to them anyway, whether they listen or not. God gives Ezekiel a scroll with sad words and tells him to eat it. It's sweet as honey in his mouth. Ezekiel is then filled with the Spirit and told to go speak to Israel. Hebrews 4:14-5:10 serves as a spiritual pep talk about sticking with Jesus because He's not just some high-and-mighty high priest, but one who gets us on every level. He's been through the wringer, too, but never messed up, so we should feel totally cool about being open with God, thanks to Him. Then it shifts to talk about every high priest being picked from among us humans, dealing gently with our mess-ups because they're no strangers to personal weakness themselves. And just like they didn't just waltz into the job, Jesus didn't either—He was chosen by God. His real street cred comes from how He handled suffering, which made Him the perfect leader, forever in the business of bringing us closer to God.

  • Day 306 | Judah's enemies will be judged | Hebrews 4: God's Word is alive
    Nov 3 2024

Day 306 of the Holy Bible One Year CHALLENGE. After the people turn back to God, He feels sorry for them. He promises to send lots of food and remove the scary locusts. God also says He'll make up for the bad years and send dreams and visions to people. But there's a big day coming where other nations will be judged for how they treated Israel. In the end, God's home, Jerusalem, will be a safe place and everyone will know that God is in charge. In Hebrews, even though God promised a restful place, some people didn't get there because they didn't trust Him. But we still have a chance. We should try hard to enter that peaceful place and not doubt like they did. God's word is powerful, and it can see deep inside us. Nothing is hidden from God; He sees everything.

  • Day 305 | Joel warns of a locust plague | Hebrews 3: Jesus is greater than Moses
    Nov 1 2023

Day 305 of the Holy Bible One Year CHALLENGE. There's a big locust invasion that's ruining all the crops. Joel tells the people that this is a wake-up call from God. Things are really bad, and even the animals are sad because there's no food. Joel urges everyone to fast, cry, and gather at God's house to ask for His help. In Hebrews, the writer talks about how Jesus is greater than Moses. Just like a builder is more important than the house he built, Jesus is more important than Moses. But people should be careful. If they don't believe and trust in God, their hearts can become hard and they might turn away from Him.

  • Day 304 | Obadiah tells of the Lord's wrath on Edom | Hebrews 2: Why Jesus became human
    Oct 31 2023

Day 304 of the Holy Bible One Year CHALLENGE. Obadiah warns the Edomites (a group living in the mountains) that bad times are coming for them because they acted mean to their relatives, the Israelites, during Israel's rough patch. God's not happy with Edom's pride and betrayal, so He's going to make them fall big time. In the end, Israel will come back strong and take over the places Edom took from them, while Edom will disappear. It's a message about payback and God taking care of His own.
People shouldn't ignore what God says. Jesus, who was made a little lower than angels for a bit, suffered death to help everyone. Because of this, he's now super important and above angels. Jesus became like humans to truly understand and help them, especially when they mess up.

  • Day 303 | Horrors of the Attack on Jerusalem | Hebrews: An Introduction
    Oct 31 2024

Day 303 of the Holy Bible One Year CHALLENGE. In these verses from Lamentations, the writer talks about how the people did wrong things and now they're facing tough times because of it. They're saying sorry to God and asking Him to not forget them. They talk about how hard things have been, like being hungry and other nations treating them badly. At the end, they hope God will help them, but they're not sure if He will. The whole mood is pretty sad and full of mixed feelings. Hebrews 1 is about how God, who in the past spoke through prophets, has now spoken to us through His Son, Jesus. Jesus is described as being superior to angels and reflects God's glory perfectly. He made the world, sustains everything with His word, and cleansed people's sins. This chapter stresses Jesus' important role and how He's greater than the angels, using references from the Old Testament to back it up.

  • Day 302 | The Meaning of Suffering | Letter to Philemon
    Oct 30 2024

Day 302 of the Holy Bible One Year CHALLENGE. Jerusalem is very sad and broken. The people feel like God is mad at them. But even when they are super sad, they remember that God is kind and cares about them. Every new day, they think about God's love. They hope that if they think about what they did wrong and say sorry, God will be close to them again.

Paul writes a letter to Philemon from prison. In this letter, Paul talks about a man named Onesimus, who used to be Philemon's slave but ran away. However, Onesimus met Paul and became a Christian. Now, Paul is sending him back to Philemon, not as a slave, but as a brother in Christ. Paul asks Philemon to welcome Onesimus with love and to forgive him. He even says if Onesimus owes Philemon anything, Paul will pay it back. Paul trusts that Philemon will do even more than he asks. He hopes to visit Philemon soon, and he asks Philemon to prepare a guest room for him. The letter ends with greetings from other Christians with Paul and a wish for God's grace to be with Philemon's spirit.

  • Day 301 | Lamentations: Introduction | Titus 3: The Right Way to Live
    Oct 28 2023

Day 301 of the Holy Bible One Year CHALLENGE. Jerusalem is super sad because it's empty and destroyed. People were taken away, and the city remembers better times. They know God punished them for a reason, and they talk about how tough things were during the attack. Paul reminds people to obey their leaders and avoid fighting. He says God saved us because of His mercy, not because of anything we did. Because of this, we should live good lives. Paul also tells Titus to avoid pointless arguments and warns him about divisive people. He sends greetings and wishes everyone God's grace.
