  • Trust and Leadership, Episode 3
    Mar 20 2023

"As we move into an even more transparent interdependent global reality, trust is more career critical than it has ever been." -- Stephen M. R. Covey, The Speed of Trust, Forward xxv.

Inspired by book The Speed of Trust, by Stephen M. R. Covey, we're talking about trust. Trust is the key leadership competency of the new global economy.

Today, we look briefly at Covey's 5 Waves (or areas) of Trust and then discuss rebuilding trust. The Christian church--local congregations as well as the universal church--needs to rebuild trust in our world. Financial and sexual scandals, manipulative and narcissistic leaders, and spiritual abuse have plagued Christianity in recent years. We have a responsibility to repair what has been broken (Romans 12:18--the conflict that comes from lack of trust creates the opposite of peace).

My mind traveled to the story of Jacob and Esau. The story of their broken relationship is told in Genesis 27, and the story of reconciliation (rebuilding trust) comes in Genesis 32. Jacob did three things:
    1) He accepted responsibility and initiated the repair of the relationship. (humility)
    2) He did not assume that words were enough. (competency)
    3) He knew completely healing the wound would take time. (consistency)

A wound that is not completely healed is easily reopened.

    Notes:
    Intro is 30 second long.
    A prayer comes at 17:43.
My thoughts and prayers are not scripted or edited.
