How did Epcot evolve from an experimental prototype community to a theme park with an identity crisis?

In this episode of Distory, we wrap up our exploration of the evolution of EPCOT by discovering what happened to Walt’s concept of a futuristic community after he passed away. To get some context of how the team was trying to make it happen despite the loss, we review some rare WED 1973 inter-office memos that reveal the thoughts and design direction of what EPCOT could be. We also walk through the ways the Imagineers had to get creative in order to save the concept from being scrapped altogether during the 1970s energy crisis. Why did Walt Disney have Herb Ryman's E.P.C.O.T.'s concept art altered from the original version? In this episode of Distory, we go back in time to explore the E.P.C.O.T. that never was, Walt Disney's original vision for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. After exploring the influence of Victor Gruen on Walt's plans, we move through the city step-by-step, finding nooks and crannies of previously unexplored history along the way courtesy of a Distory listener's exclusive interview with Imagineer George McGinnis. Along the way, we find some not-so-magical policies that the average American wouldn't particularly like, a pub that pays homage to a Disney animation hangout, and a lost airport that can still (sort of) be found at Walt Disney World today.

What hidden stories can be found in the trees in Disneyland?

In the Distorian's Lounge with Kate this week, we return to Disneyland to tell 10 more tree-mendous tales of unique trees in Disneyland that all have stories to tell. From condolence trees to ones that trick your perception of the park, these stories include some obscure details that even the biggest Disney history fans may not have heard before. As we make our way around Disneyland on this tree tour, we learn about how Lillian was irritated with Walt (and how he tried to appease her the wrong way), a tree that went missing in Fantasyland, and another one that did a little traveling over the years. We end our tour with a famous Disneyland resident that some people often overlook and a little preview of Kate’s upcoming book.

In this episode of Distory, we walk the queue of Walt Disney World’s Seven Dwarf’s Mine Train to discover not only some fun interactive features that the Imagineers added for guests to discover, but also some hidden secrets you may not even realize are nods to the classic 1937 animation. Kirk takes us on a rabbit trail about thatched roofs, Kate shares an epic task Ken Anderson created for Walt while he was deathly ill, and we both marvel at the techniques the original animators used to create the scenes we know and love from this historic Disney film. After Kirk yells at Kate to spin some barrels and we learn how to eat our soup properly, we share a few personal projects that have us whistling while we work before climbing aboard some hand-crafted mine carts bound for a mine where a million diamonds shine.

WDW’s new fantasyland was not planned to look like the

one we have today.

In this episode of Distory, we visit the dilapidated Fantasyland of the Magic Kingdom of the late 90s and early 2000s to watch how Imagineering’s major overhaul of this land evolved over time. Along the way, we find some lost concepts of major areas that were scrapped, including a Cinderella attraction that is not *quite* like the one Kate wishes Disney would create. As we finally arrive at the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train concept, we dive into the construction process. Kate walks us through the evolution of the ride vehicles in development, including their fascinating hand-painting process. Kirk discusses the construction on a larger scale, walking us through the assembly of this E-ticket attraction. We also both share some of our other Disney projects and wax nostalgic about the first time we met each other IRL (in real life).

Is this the most unhinged attraction that Disney has ever created?

In this episode of Distory, we head back to the 1971 version of Snow White’s Adventures in Walt Disney World. We start by finding ourselves in a dark dwarf’s cottage (with a bizarre guest) before encountering many MANY jump scares by the terrifying witch, whose hands have a secret. We race through the mine before discovering a crazy scene that is not in the original film and make a connection between its ending and the 1958 Alice in Wonderland dark ride. After we escape, we move forward in time to the 1994 version of Snow White’s Scary Adventures, finding the ways Imagineering tried to make this ride less scary and more like the original film. Much to Kirk’s chagrin, Kate talks about the history of turtlenecks, ponders the different looks of princes, and gives us some mirror lessons before we say goodbye to this bizarre classic attraction.
