Summary
Julian’s boss is newly single, ridiculously hot, and looking his way. He’s so screwed.
Cal Morgan’s life was going right on plan—got the wife, the baby, and the board game café he opened with his best friends. At least until his wife dropped the dreaded "d" word. Newly divorced and juggling custody of their toddler with his ex, Cal’s dreams of a family are burnt to ash.
Julian Hale’s been carrying a torch for his sexy boss, Cal, for far too long. As the oldest of five and surrogate mom to his siblings, Julian gets tugged in so many directions that he’s never made time for himself—his wants, his desires—and he definitely desires this man.
However, when Cal starts turning those scorching stares Julian’s way, he can’t resist, even though he should. They’re boss and employee, and Cal’s fresh out of a divorce with a two-year-old—it’s a recipe for disaster even if they’re both falling fast. But when Julian’s application to nursing school gets accepted, he’ll have to choose between pursuing the dreams he set aside when his mom died or the one man he could imagine a future with. Life taught him early on that he’ll never get both.

I loved this book!
I got into this series in the middle; my first book was number five, Dexterity Check, so I was happy to get the chance to listen to and review book two, Wisdom Check. It's the first book I've listened to narrated by Zachary Zaba. I think he did a pretty good job with this one.
Cal and Julien are so good together! I loved all of the witty dialogue and Katherine McIntyre's writing was, as always, descriptive and wonderful.

Sweet with great narration!
I liked this book and I loved the narrator and his performance!
Contains spoilers!
This is a book about 2 men with their own issues who end up falling in love and eventually get their HEA.
Cal is the boss of Jules and also a newly divorced father of a toddler. He tries to navigate all the problems with being recently divorced while still needing to co-parent with his ex.
Jules is helping his dad taking care of his sibblings after his mom died young. He has a major crush on his boss, Cal and Cal starts to realize how hot AND kind Jules is to him.
Soon they both give in to the growing attraction between them.
Both of them face some issues (these issues seem too fabricated for me) but with each other’s (and some other friends’) help they are able to
This is a sweet book with a great narration!

Beautiful story
I loved Cal and Jullian’s story, it was sweet and romantic and just a little bit angsty. Both characters were lovable and relatable and I was rooting for them. I also really loved how the author portrayed Cal’s two-year-old daughter. Very realistic. Wonderful story, I had a great time reading it.
I’m a big fan of the narrator and I thought that he was perfect for the story! I loved how he brought to life Cal and Julian. Absolutely fantastic audiobook.

Sweet and wonderful!
Filled with heart, steam, wit, and humor, this story and found family has captivated me and totally gotten their hooks in me.
Cal and Jules are perfect for each other, and though their journey isn't all that smooth, the ups and down only strengthen the power and swoonworthyness of their story! I loved it!

Single dads are the best
When I first encountered Cal in Strength Check, his marriage was clearly in trouble. Even from the outside looking in, his wife wasn’t happy, Cal wasn’t happy, and although Kayleigh the toddler didn’t appear to be suffering the effects of all the tension in the house, Cal’s friends clearly were. Thanksgiving dinner was pretty much the beginning of the end.
Fast forward to this book. Cal’s splitting custody with his ex and his friends have come to help him rearrange his home so Sara’s presence won’t hang over the space. Cal also co-owns and runs Tabletop Tavern – a gamer’s paradise where people come to play board games. They stay for the food and camaraderie.
Julian’s been hung up on Cal for the longest time. He’s a loyal employee. Cal’s his wonderful boss. His married boss. Julian wasn’t touching that. But now Sara’s gone and Cal really needs a friend. Julian’s got his own problems. The eldest of five children, he’s taken on the huge responsibility of making sure each sibling gets a good education and eventually a career. It’s been like that since his mother died and his father has to work so much. Finally, with his youngest brother in his senior year of high school, Julian feels like he’s got a shot for his own dream – to go to nursing school.
After a particular encounter in the walk-in fridge, Julian and Cal start dating seriously. Only life’s complicated. Julian’s little brother is in trouble. Cal and Sara are struggling to make joint custody work. With all that’s going on, how’s Julian supposed to ask Cal to date him – and even make a life with him – when his insane schedule is about to become even crazier?
And Cal’s got problems. The two men aren’t communicating properly and things spiral out of control – especially when another party inserts themselves into the men’s relationship. Oh, and don’t forget the ex opening a competing café down the street. Things get pretty grim.
However, this is a Katherine McIntyre romance – I knew I’d get my happy ending. And I did! I really enjoyed listening to the story unfold. I especially enjoyed Zachary Zaba’s narration of the story. I’m loving this series and I can’t wait for more!

very good
4.25 stars. A very enjoyable narrator who always does an outstanding job on interpreting the feelings of the characters. Both MCs came with a fair amount of baggage and bad previous relationship experiences. I did struggle a bit with the really short time Cal had between having his wife divorce him and just starting a joint custody arrangement and starting a relationship with Julian pretty much at the same time. As he went from an abusive relationship mostly from his father growing up to an abusive relationship from his ex wife a bit of room to find himself first would have felt better for me. Julian was very sweet and the other characters were truly interesting.

Family and support
Cal and Julien are a pretty cute couple. I love their dance around each other before hooking up, and I especially enjoy the way they each support and hype the other one up.
This one is all about family—the support of good ones and the difficulties of bad ones. Cal is an utterly devoted father who is recently divorced from a toxic woman, and his family (especially his dad) isn’t much better. He’s struggling with the transition of only having his daughter every other week, while also co-running a business.
Julian on the other hand has been co-parenting his siblings since his mother passed away. Putting his dreams and life on hold. That also included losing boyfriends who didn’t understand the commitment.
Now is their time to shine and find happiness.
Wisdom Check is available as an audiobook, performed by Zachary Zaba. Zachary’s a great narrator, so I definitely recommend grabbing it. It’s well done and very enjoyable.

Looking forward to the other stories
Story = 3.5 stars
Narration = 5 stars
This was an enjoyable story but for me it was just ok. It was sweet with medium angst. I loved both of the main characters and they were a great couple in the few moments they shared alone. I love how both are so devoted to their families. The little girl was adorable.
I felt like there was way too much drama coming from all over the place and not enough relationship development shown. The drama with the ex kind of ruined the enjoyment for me. I also would have liked even a little bit more steam.
There was great word building. I enjoyed the uniqueness of the cafe setting and the group of friends were all wonderful. I'm looking forward to the future stories.
The narrator did a fantastic job. His voice was pleasant to listen to and he kept a good pace. He expressed all the emotions wonderfully and brought the story to life. He gave all of the characters, including side characters their own distinct voice that suited each of them perfectly so it was easy to follow the story and made it a pleasure to listen to.

Cute story
Take a single dad, the board game cafe he owns, add his employee and you have a cute, somewhat forbidden romance story.
There is OW drama which was unfortunate for me, but Cal and Julian were cute together, and seeing them overcome their hurdles (both external to the relationship and within it) left me satisfied.

MM Friends to Lovers
We meet Julian and Cal, plus many side characters, some from previous books in the series; having said that, I'm reading these books as standalone, and I don't feel that I've missed out, as the book is well written and describes the world-building well.
Well written, a story with two MCs who have so much baggage it does detract from their love story a little, but still immensely enjoyable, we have two people who start as friends and gradually admit their feelings for one another.
Zachary Zaba's narration was a delight. His clear and distinct voice, his ability to switch between different character voices, and his knack for keeping the listener engaged made the experience truly enjoyable. I found myself speeding up the narration to 1.20 on Audible, which is my norm.
