Summary

One night in a remote hunting lodge with a Hollywood director causes an international scandal that wrecks Astrid's glittering stage career, and her marriage. Her ex-husband, the charismatic Scottish actor Magnus Fellowes, goes on to find global fame, while Astrid retreats to a disintegrating Sussex windmill.

Now 82, she lives there still, with a troupe of dachshunds and her long-suffering friend, Mrs Baker, who came to clean twenty years ago and never left. But the past is catching up with them. There has been an 'Awful Incident' at the windmill; the women are in shock. Then Astrid hears that Magnus, now on his death bed, is writing a tell-all memoir. Outraged, she sets off for Scotland, determined to stop him.

Windmill Hill is the story of two very different women, both with painful pasts, and their eccentric friendship - deep, enduring, and loyal to the last.

Delicious!

The story took me a couple of chapters to get into, and at the beginning I wasn’t sure I would stay the course…. But was I glad I did. Fabulous characters, so deliciously narrated, and capturing the essence of Astrid in particular. The eccentricity of Astrid and indeed every occupant past and present of the windmill was so addictive. I could actually start this book again, and enjoy it more because it’s like a comfortable old friend, the more time you spend with them, the more you enjoy their company and yet every time you meet you find another facet to their personality. Needless to say, I loved this book, and I really didn’t expect to!

There’s a great book in there - if you can find it!

Why do authors want their readers to work so hard? The complicated structure of this amazing book spoils it - like a jig saw of wonderful characters, storylines, incidents that you have to unravel. Maybe it better off the page but the narration is wonderful. Just love the characters and the Dickensian range and quality - it’s funny, fascinating but frustrating. So annoying . might have to listen to it all over again because I just love the main character.

I loved this book

I loved the twists and turns of this engaging story and while it does roam backwards and forwards and to and fro, I never had any problem following the narrative. My only issue is with the slightly woeful Scottish and American accents which grated for me and distracted from a very important part of the story - but it didn’t put me off listening.

Good listen

I enjoyed much about this book. It needs a better edit as sometimes things were repeated unnecessarily. The performance was good with the exception of the Scottish accent which was terrible

Wonderful stories

Interweaving threads make this an absorbing listen. Some very funny moments (miniature dachshunds) as well as horrible tragedy.
