Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The instant Sunday Times bestseller.
The instant number one New York Times best seller
The Instant number one Audible best seller.
Narrated by Will Smith.
One of the most dynamic and globally recognised entertainment forces of our time opens up fully about his life, in a brave and inspiring book that traces his learning curve to a place where outer success, inner happiness and human connection are aligned. Along the way, Will tells the story in full of one of the most amazing rides through the worlds of music and film that anyone has ever had.
Will Smith's transformation from a fearful child in a tense West Philadelphia home to one of the biggest pop stars of his era and then one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood history, with a string of box office successes that will likely never be broken, is an epic tale of inner transformation and outer triumph, and Will tells it astonishingly well. But it's only half the story.
Will Smith thought, with good reason, that he had won at life: not only was his own success unparalleled, his whole family was at the pinnacle of the entertainment world. Only they didn't see it that way: they felt more like star performers in his circus, a seven-days-a-week job they hadn't signed up for. It turned out Will Smith's education wasn't nearly over.
This memoir is the product of a profound journey of self-knowledge, a reckoning with all that your will can get you and all that it can leave behind. Written with the help of Mark Manson, author of the multimillion-copy best seller The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, Will is the story of how one exceptional man mastered his own emotions, written in a way that can help everyone else do the same. Few of us will know the pressure of performing on the world's biggest stages for the highest of stakes, but we can all understand that the fuel that works for one stage of our journey might have to be changed if we want to make it all the way home. The combination of genuine wisdom of universal value and a life story that is preposterously entertaining, even astonishing, puts Will the book, like its author, in a category by itself.

A great memoir that is real, raw and honest
A great memoir that is real, raw and honest. The audio version really captures you and draws you in of course, he is an amazing story teller. There is no real reason (the man has money) for him to publish this book other than to tell his story. Each chapter is full of his life history, the highs and lows, plus with nuggets of knowledge and wisdom.
- You are the captain of your own ship. If you live your life based on trying to fulfill the expectations of those around you, no matter how much you care about those people, you’re setting yourself up for dissatisfaction.
- Giving is receiving. You have something to share with those around you, and when you are living with that intention in mind, it will come right back to you.
- You need to be able to be happy with yourself, before you can be happy with anyone else. Don’t put the responsibility of your happiness on other people. It doesn’t work.
- You “build the wall” of your life brick by brick. Focus on laying the next brick as well as you can, and stop focusing on the wall.
Overall I see an individual who understood his gift and worked tirelessly to achieve, a relentless work ethic to be better and to do better. An individual who wants the best, for himself and his loves ones which achieved that in abundance... but never took the time out to sit back and enjoy the fruits of labour until now.
Money and success don’t change people; they merely amplify what is already there.”– Will Smith

Not who you think he is
Great book, brilliantly read (as you’d expect) a lot of humble bragging!! But also cuts the figure of a man who’s paranoid and obsessed about acceptance, adoration and achievement.

“The worlds GREATEST actor of all time”
Ok ok I head you the first time. But this is a superb book that explores the physical and the phycological elements of being talented, rich and famous and the rewards and challenge’s all this madness brings. I was inspired for 90% of this book, the remaining 10% was the fresh Prince saying he is the “greatest actor of all time”. I reckon we could have dropped an hours reading time if he never said this over and over. Also, the monetary values of every movie on more than one occasion was a bit vulgar at times. . 😝 stay humble bro, I see you trying.
However, I loved the nostalgia, loved the iconic history, loved the music references and performances, loved the love stories with everyone. Love his recollections of his friends and family. And I love his reading performance in this epic adventure. This man is not a normal person, let’s get that part clear, this is a certified win at all costs winner, however he is extremely relatable even with my knowledge of his extraordinary life. His realisations and light bulb moments really hit home with me. I really loved the story when he finally lets go and relinquished him self to being still and silent and finds himself. That part was really quite moving and a nice payoff to the heavy driving force of nature he comes across as. I am no will smith or am I even as talented as his discarded finger nail clippings. But bloody hell I felt empowered with my own life and decisions after hearing this. Great work Big Willy. And a nice nano seconds mention of the Rock!!! Ha ha that’s all that ‘wanna be biggest movie star of all time’ deserves! Ps… I also bloody love the Rock!!!
