Summary
Amazon Charts bestselling author Jennifer Millikin delivers an emotional and riveting love story.
Charming and heroic, there’s nothing about Gabriel Woodruff that Avery Burke doesn’t love. His warm brown eyes, his generosity, that small scar above his lip. The newspaper photo of him carrying her from a burning home only adds to the romance of it all.
A fairytale beginning and a picture-perfect marriage practically guarantees Avery and Gabriel a ride into the sunset. But every relationship has flaws, and what they ignored while they were busy being flawless eventually surfaces. The unraveling begins with the smallest tug on the tiniest string.
Their fall is spectacular, the kind that makes the paper.
When the fairytale goes up in smoke, Avery and Gabriel are forced to ask themselves hard questions.
What does for better or worse really mean?
Is this their second chance at a once-in-a-lifetime love?
What do we keep, when we lose it all?

Gabriel is a firefighter who saved a woman by the name of Avery from a house fire and after the fire, no one would have imagined how much their lives were about to change. From the moment Gabriel saved Avery and the moment they met there was a connection between the two of them and before too long they were married and living what seemed to be a perfect life, until it wasn’t, until something happened and everything came crashing down. Can these two overcome the hurdles that have been put in the way? Are they strong enough to overcome the damage that has been done? Does love conquer all?
This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride. There was so much to unpack and work through and some of the topics mentioned in the book hit home for me. The author did an amazing job at representing mental like PTSD and trauma and also touching on alcoholism, family drama, grief, sorrow, pain, loss, and so many more emotions. It was easy to see that these two were meant to be and that even though they broke up, the love was still very much there but it was just going to take them a lot of work to get their relationship in a good place.
This book was not short of plot twists. There were moments when I thought I had things all figured out, but I was wrong! it was well written with relatable characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. It will take you on an emotional and bumpy ride but the story is worth all the pain!
I can’t wait to see what else this author has up her sleeve! I highly recommend this book! You won’t be disappointed.

Emotional Journey
This was an incredibly intense and emotional journey. I loved all of the healing that Avery and Gabe went through. This book pulls you in and brings you on this path to healing along with the characters. You see how they started: where things went wrong and how they found their way to each other. This was emotional, intense and beautiful.
The narration was perfect for this story.

Hard fought second chance romance
"This book is a journey." I agree one thousand percent. The storytelling is so unique and engaging. The use of therapy to assist Avery's POV really kept my attention dialed in. Admittedly, marriage-in-trouble romances are not my go-to, but this story is just so good and I am glad I picked it up. Gabriel is such a tortured soul but in a very unassuming way and his character is so relatable because of that. The focus on the importance of mental health and how no one is immune was such a powerful message and this author delivered it in a beautiful story.
I am so happy that I was able to experience this book on audio. Hearing this brought to life by two amazingly talented narrators really amplified the emotional aspect. The nuances delivered by each, the love and happiness in the light-hearted moments and the broken voices and anger and sadness during the darker times, all came through in spades. They also did an amazing job in differentiating between their own and their side characters so well. The duet production was a huge bonus.

An Enthralling & Emotional Journey! Amazing🎧📚🎧
Wow, just wow, Jennifer Millikin left me speechless, and it took time to get my voice back, and I am still wowed by this book, the journey, the unique telling of the story, an emotional rollercoaster ride and romance story like no other. The characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with. Gabriel Woodruff and Avery Burke’s story starts with an act of heroism, a whirlwind romance, and all was great until it wasn’t and the author is upfront about that in the unique telling of their story, a story that will charm your heart, then breaks it and then puts it back together to give you a whole new heart. No spoilers here, just read or better yet, listen to the audiobook, check your trigger warnings before starting, because the author covers some sensitive topics, and she keeps it all real. The writing, plot, world building, character growth and development are just as incredible as the story itself, which is captivating from start to end. It is a multi-layered story with drama, angst, heartfelt emotions, and steamy romance. A story of love, loss, forgiveness and learning to live and love again. Jennifer Millikin, thank you for this amazing story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 Victoria Dickson and Wesley Mercer did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life, and did so with a complete understanding of who they were portraying, giving each a voice that was fitting and was believable in their roles. Mercer nailed it as Gabriel, showcasing every aspect of his personality and demeanor, from his charm to his struggles and then his determination. Dickson did the same for Avery, showcasing her personality and demeanor perfectly, from her struggles to her strengths. Both were just as fabulous performing the roles of the secondary characters, too. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. These are two entertaining storytellers and their duet performance elevates this already amazing story to another level. Thanks for the wonderful listen.

an emotional journey
This is a very angsty emotional audiobook and is perfectly narrated by Victoria Dickson and Wesley Mercer.
They tell this story beautifully with all the right amounts of emotion with their voices whether that emotion is heartbreak, lust or joy. They portray Avery and Gabriel with such talent I was lost to their voices and this very heart felt love story.
Heed the trigger warnings before you proceed with reading or listening to this book because Avery and Gabriel have serious issues that pull on your heart strings and your conscious.
A traumatic house fire has Avery going to therapy and finding the man who saved her life that night..This book is told partly through Avery's therapy sessions.
When they meet sparks fly between them and a beautiful too good to be true love story begins...But nothing is perfect and soon things begin to crumble..Because they both have issues that have never been resolved.
This book is told in two parts and their second chance romance is so emotional it made my heart ache..I loved hearing how they find their waay back to one another.
Jennifer Millikin as written an emotionally charged wonderful story that you will not be able to walk away from, and that will stay with you for a long time.
It is a real rollercoaster of feelings.
Superb.

Avery and Gabriel!
From their first meeting Gabriel was Avery’s hero when he saved her from a fire. The feelings they had for each other were immediate and falling in love was a fait accompli. She thought that nothing could impact the love they shared however nothing is perfect and expecting that of the person you love could have devastating consequences.
Gabriel loved Avery with his whole heart but with the difficulties he has faced in the past and the present sometimes not even love is enough. He made serious mistakes, but the one constant was his love for Avery. He made the only choice he thought he could at the time but when fate brings them back together can they overcome the pain of their past and have a second chance?
The way this story is told as it relates to what happened regarding her relationship with Gabriel, both the good and the bad, only has you more invested in the characters. The performance of the narrators will only immerse you more deeply in the story as they bring out every heartfelt emotion.
