About this listen
Everybody thinks they know Mina McCreery.
Everyone has a theory on what happened to her sister.
Now it's time to find out the truth....
Mina McCreery's sister Evelyn disappeared 19 years ago. Her life has been defined by the intense public interest in the case. Now an anxious and reclusive adult, she lives alone on her family's destocked sheep farm.
When Lane, a private investigator, approaches her with an offer to reinvestigate the case, she rejects him. The attention has had nothing but negative consequences for her and her family, and never brought them closer to an answer.
Lane wins her trust when his unconventional methods show promise, but he has his own motivations for wanting to solve the case, and his obsession with the answer will ultimately risk both their lives.
Superbly written, taut and compassionate, Wake looks at what can happen when people's private tragedies become public property, and the ripples of trauma that follow violent crimes. Wake won the CWA Debut Dagger in 2019.

Another Aussie author to watch
Shelley Burr is, to me, a new author and certainly one to watch out for. The Aussie noir genre is going from strength to strength. In this tale, a young girl goes missing and the lives of those left behind are shaped forever by this event.
The girl lived on an isolated farm. The nearest neighbours are miles away and the author creates a real sense of isolation and distance, common in the outback. Her elder sister has become reclusive but is keen to solve the mystery of the disappearance. A cold case review is undertaken by a PI who has issues of his own and these are teased out but by bit in this very satisfying story.
The plotting is complex and I was totally invested in the characters and the investigation. New information comes to light, witnesses are reinterviewed and it’s a great police procedural as well as a thriller. Strong characters and a plot which keeps you guessing and has a number of surprising twists.

Great start please carry on
Really enjoyed this and although at times you think you’ve guessed the ending, it’s not quite how it seems.

Really enjoyed this book
The characters were great. The twists and turns of their relationship continued until the end and I never knew what was coming but they were always very human and real. The decisions made all seemed reasonable and there was a lot of nuance in their behaviour. More please.

Such a satisfyingly good story!
from beginning to end, great plot, succinct dialogue, near perfect timing. I loved this story, totally engrossed in how it would be resolved. so often with the mystery genre it's the journey, not the destination, but with this the ending was every bit as well thought out as the test of it ❤️

Liked the story and characters. Liked hearing about farming and old and new ways of investigating and social media interference

Excellent
Really enjoyed this. There were times it needed to ‘get on with it’ and it seemed deliberately obtuse but on the whole well worth listening. Narrator was excellent too. Recommend
