Nick Kyme breathes life and humility into the members of this otherwise supercilious regiment as they battle against impossible odds.
The story: as war rages across the Sabbat Worlds, the Volpone Bluebloods are sent to Gnostes at the head of a massive Imperial host. Tasked with the liberation of the Agria island chain from the entrenched Blood Pact, the haughty soldiers of the Volpone find their mettle sorely tested in a brutal meat grinder. After a punishing setback threatens to derail the campaign, an unlikely champion rises through the ranks and victory once again seems possible. But the propaganda of war is a fickle beast, and the Archenemy are cultivating a plot the Imperium can scarcely fathom. Through glory and honour, the Volpone are desperate to prevail, but can they endure the rigours of the bloodiest campaign in their vaunted history and come out the other side intact?

A unique regiment
interesting characters and story. performance wasn't ideal, I found that many of the voices were too similar which can lead to confusion at times - the narration is good and clearly spoken, just more variety of tone/accent would have made it more interesting.

Very good
I always felt that the Volpone were a bit hard done by in the orginal books, seeming almost like a stand in bad guy posh regiment. This book does them justice.

of blue blood and other fictions
In this Warhammer 40k Prince and the pauper story all the political intrigue that goes on during a military campaign amongst the officer classes of the elite volpone regiments. Love death and the right amount of chaos worshipping lunacy its a book you can really get your teeth into well written and excellent read. a great addition to all that sabbat worlds.

Couldn’t finish - just dragged on..
For some reason the narrator decided to put on some sort of ‘vocal swagger’, which was ok-ish for the characters but for the narration itself became VERY tiresome…
Gave up with 4hrs to go after realising I hadn’t been listening as often as I usually and avidly do!

reads like dan abnett... fan fiction
trying to capture the savagery of the sabbat worlds crusade.
too many characters.
yes abnett brings in characters and has them savagely cut down. kyme seems to do the same but the connection to the characters just isn't there.
maybe I'd enjoy it more if read rather than listened to.

Like a Ghosts book but darker (and everyone is arsehole)
This book takes a little while to get going, but once it does it’s quite punchy. There are a lot of dark moments and some interesting characters and introspection. Andrew Wincott’s performance is perfect.

solid but not brilliant
this is a decent and solid, if somewhat underwhelming addition to the 40k Imperial Guard library.
the story and characters are fine but nothing really leapt out at me and makes me want to see or know more about anyone involved in the story. seeing as how this is set in the Sabbat Worlds crusade alongside Dan Abnett's Gaunts Ghosts novels the gulf in quality is a bit disappointing in my opinion.
the Volpone are fleshed out more than just "arrogant bluebloods" but there is something that feels a bit artificial about it all.
Kyme is a good author, this one unfortunately is a slight miss for me

Outstanding spin off, hope they write more.
Performance - The narrator took a chapter or two to find his pacing but when he did he make an excellent job of it.
Characters - interesting, varied, enigmatic, as products of a strict aristocratic society the characters are a mix of virtues and flaws - just like real people - which makes them all the more relatable. Would love to read more about them and their continuing development.
Story - WOW. I actually preferred this to many of the Gaunts Ghosts novels, so many twists, turns and plots. The second half of the book in particular was outstanding, proper edge of your seat stuff.
