Summary

When 20-year-old police recruit Kiera Hudson is posted to the remote town of The Ragged Cove, her life is changed forever. Investigating a series of horrific murders, grave desecrations, and missing persons, with her unique ability of "seeing," Kiera soon realizes her life is in danger.

But when Kiera falls in love with police officer Luke Bishop, not only is her mind and her heart opened to a terrifying new world, she comes to suspect that Luke might be involved in the killings. In a race against time to unearth the truth, Kiera must discover the identity of who or what is behind the gruesome deaths on the "Vampire Shift".

Excellent narration

Though story is slow to start it gives a very good introduction into Kiera Hudson's world.

The narrator did an excellent job with the story making efforts to do different voices for different characters thus bring the story to life.

Enjoyable, Will Not Be Continuing On With Series

When I wrote a review for this book on GoodReads, I said it was probably more of a 3.5 star. Having had some time to reflect since then, I think it is a solid 3 star audiobook. It is that kind of story that you can happily follow, enjoying the big picture, and finish feeling like you didn't waste your time.

Vampire Shift has a plot with a lot of mystery, and at times I felt like that mystery was really going places, I found I was guessing what was going to happen and was being led around well enough that I didn't feel like everything was incredibly predictable.

The Heroine is not a Helpless Hilda, but I did find myself rolling my eyes a lot.
Reasons for eye-rolling:
- When sappy things are said. I will warn you now, there is INSTALOVE, however, I am an unromantic person, so take the sappy problem with a grain of salt.
- The heroine has savant-like abilities, yet occasionally shows incredible naivety. She's supposed to be able to see details in everything, yet occasionally she's like "Oh, whatever do you mean?" When an emotion has literally been spelled out for her.
- She's supposed to have survived sonic-boom-level-travel, outside of an aircraft, which - and feel free to prove me wrong - is not physically possible. In fact, they have chats at this speed.

However, having said this, the book is fast paced, the heroine rescues herself and has a back bone, and you don't truly know what's going on until it happens. I think younger readers may not see it at all.

I don't think there is enough here for me to continue on with the series, but not because of any massive fault of the book, it's just not what I'm looking for.

Pretty good story!

Would you consider the audio edition of Vampire Shift to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version.

Would you recommend Vampire Shift to your friends? Why or why not?

Yeah, I would recommend it to people who like vampires. It was quite scary in places, and I think vampire fans would enjoy the instensity of it.

What does Keely Beresford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Life! I loved the narration, and the use of different voices for some of the characters. Keely Beresford is very talented. :)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, but I can't tell without ruining the plot!

Any additional comments?

Overall, I thought it was a good story, with moments that were super gripping. I would like to hear what happens next!

Great story poor narrator

story very good twists and very easy listening narrator spoils story as she reads a vampire story the way a infant school teacher would read Peppa pig you expect everyone to jump in to muddy puddles but that aside story ends with a lot of unanswered questions so you have to get book two

Great introduction to Kiera's world

Would you listen to Vampire Shift again? Why?

I probably would listen to this again, Keely Beresford has a rather nice voice which makes it easy to just sit back and enjoy. But i always find I don't fully absorb everything when someone reads to me (and even when reading myself) I will pick up on something new on a re-read.

Any additional comments?

This is the first time in a long time I have read a book where we have met traditional vampires... aversion to sunlight, crucifixes and holy water and have a predilection for human blood. Add in to the mix a Sherlock-esque main character (Kiera has an amazing ability to pick up on all the little things that most people would not notice) and you have yourself a nifty little mystery story begging to be read. Or in my case listened to as i had the audio version.

My only reason for not giving this the full 5 stars was the narrator irked me. There was no discernible difference in the tone of her voice between hushed or shouted speech which made certain scenes difficult to understand immediately... and im not sure if it was again the narrators tone of voice or the way O'Rourke has written the character but Kiera at times seemed incredibly whiny and that irked me because it seemed the complete opposite of everything else about her.

O'Rourke does a marvellous job of weaving his tale of mystery and builds the atmosphere without it ever feeling like a spoof of a Hammer Horror. There are some truly awful (for Kiera) scenes and it is something that the vampire/paranormal genre has been lacking most recently. The actual mystery of the story is slowly unveiled and i can guarantee that fairly early on you will have a good idea as to what/who is responsible for what. I can also guarantee that you will be wrong. And you will be wrong with your next idea. There are a few twists and turns in this book that will leave you guessing right to the very last page.

Keep going, it gets better

Would you listen to Vampire Shift again? Why?

No, because the next book in the series is better and the narrator is much more into the story

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The end was no surprise as the author keep dropping clues throughout the story , but there is enough of a cliff hanger to make you want to read the next book.

What aspect of Keely Beresford’s performance might you have changed?

She needs to enjoy herself more . At times her performance is slightly monotone

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Keira uses her gift to see situations , I enjoyed the way the author explain how she worked them out

Any additional comments?

It is very slow at the beginning , but keep going as it does get exciting
