On the brink of defeat, Hitler commissioned 10,000 V2s - ballistic rockets that carried a one-ton warhead at three times the speed of sound, which he believed would win the war.
Dr Rudi Graf who, along with his friend Werner von Braun, had once dreamt of sending a rocket to the moon, now finds himself in November 1944 in a bleak seaside town in Occupied Holland, launching V2s against London. No one understands the volatile, deadly machine better than Graf, but his disillusionment with the war leads to him being investigated for sabotage.
Kay Caton-Walsh, an officer in the WAAF, has experienced first-hand the horror of a V2 strike. When 160 Londoners, mostly women and children, are killed by a single missile, the government decides to send a team of WAAFs to newly-liberated Belgium in the hope of discovering the location of the launch sites. But not all the Germans have left, and Kay finds herself in mortal danger.
As the war reaches its desperate end, their twin stories play out, interlocked and separate, until their destinies are finally forced together.

Poor stuff full of rubbish
It seems that the trend to make a book longer by filling it with irrelevant twaddle has reached new heights here. I have always respected Robert Harris but not any more.... Long details about victims of the V2 attack are rubbish... do we have to know he was a 34 year old heating engineer etc etc etc. No. No more stuff like this please!

not as good as his other books
a bit too far fetched, the same characters always interacting with the same characters, kay and graf were bound to intercourse with each other before the end

Excellent in All Aspects
Great historical and technical detail; yet wrapped around by a convincing and moving story populated by empathetic and rounded characters. I especially liked the ending as I sometimes find Harris is excellent at setting up a premise which sometimes disappoints at the end. This was not the case here where despite it being obvious afterwards was totally unexpected and so really fitting So massive congratulations to all. One final thanks should be made for the excellent reading by David. A tour de force.

Good story. well read.
Good story. well read. I enjoyed the book, Author is very good at war time pieces like this.

Lightweight Harris
I am such a fan of Robert Harris and he's focussed on such an interesting little known truth about the Second World War. It's subtle and clever and I wouldn't have missed it, but it's not as rich as some of his other works.

Another wonderful book by Robert Harris.
An excellent listen. As high a standard as you’d expect from Robert Harris. Full of fascinating detail of the V2s themselves, Although this part may not be entertaining to all. I advise listeners to listen to the Very end of the acknowledgements as the most powerful punch is saved for last.

Another fantastic Harris war novel
Learnt so much from this book, and it’s the first time I’ve listened to one Harris’ novels rather than reading them. Really engaging narrator and a really great parallel storyline.
