About this listen
''It's clear you're in the hands of a master storyteller' - Alex Michaelides
Upgrade is the mind-bending thriller from Blake Crouch, author of the bestselling Dark Matter and Recursion.. . .
‘You are the next step in human evolution . . .’
What if you were capable of more?
Your concentration was better, you could multitask quicker, read faster, memorize more, sleep deeper.
For Logan Ramsay, it’s happening. He’s beginning to see the world around him, even those he loves the most, in whole new ways.
He knows that it’s not natural, that his genes have been hacked. He has been targeted for an upgrade.
Logan’s family legacy is one he has been trying to escape for decades and it has left him vulnerable to attack. But with a terrifying plan in place to replicate his upgrade throughout the world’s population, he may be the only person capable of stopping what has already been set in motion.
To win this war against humanity Logan will now have to become something other than himself . . .
Intricately plotted and epic in scope, Upgrade asks us to ponder the limits of our humanity – and our boundless potential. Are you ready for the impossible?

Ok but ‘by the numbers’
I finished this, and enjoyed it in parts, but sadly found it difficult to really engage with the story or characters.

Absolute banger
Amazing pacing for the story, I lost focus a few times but when I really understood what's happening it felt good.
Food for thought is a great way to describe it.

genetic engineering suspense
written and published in the period after the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a story spun around human enhancement through genetic modifications, where scientists have developed a virus-like technique to infect and mutate people’s DNA. overall, i found the book ok, but not as good as Recursion, or as novel and unexpected. it had interesting science bits, just like the other books from the author, which i quite liked.
good performance.
looking forward to the next one, i like the overall style.

Part one is brilliant
Loved the premise and the execution of part one - highly enjoyed the topic (although for me it was a ‘busman’s holiday’). Then it kinda fell apart in part two - the science went bonkers (a mistake in gene targeting / off-targeting does not lead to a coordinated/targeted set of disease-state negative issues *rolls eyes*)… and it became a bit of a simple chase. Part three was better - settled down into a decent Dan Brown/Michael Crichton romp, and the very last thought was intriguing (if a bit weak). The occasionally overlong listing of genes was interesting to me, but might bore some, and the reading out of strings of nucleotides really came across very oddly as an audible book. Lastly, the tech was very good - for now- but hadn’t advanced enough for the time span. Similar to Verne, it was using near-now tech to suggest a parallel ‘now’ rather than a real near(ish) future. Eg the time taken to analyse the SNPs/WGS from a nanopore output was like the bad old days of coffee-break long (or overnight) BLAST runs. The IT and bio both needed a little more upgrading/distancing to be convincing for the proposed time jump from now - this will quickly look outdated. That said - great ideas, nice yarn, good romping….

Fantastic story
A very enjoyable story with great detail. I enjoyed how the characters developed overtime and also the humanity that existed in the main characters.
