About this listen

The eighth V.I. Warshawski thriller from one of America's greatest female crime writers, combining contemporary issues, social injustice and fast-paced suspense.

The discovery of a destitute family in her office basement leads V.I. Warshawski to homeless charity Home Free. But the organisation's frosty reception gives V.I. cause for concern, especially when one of its board members is then found murdered, sprawled across her desk....

Taking on the case, V.I. uncovers a framework of domestic abuse and fraud which spreads across the whole of Chicago, as well as into the abandoned tunnels beneath the city streets - where more dark secrets have been buried....

classic V.I. with more depth

Great to have another V.I. escapade.
A feminist character is hard to find these days.
Paretsky gives more emphasis and depth to V.I.s key relationships which is welcome.
However, I am left wondering and smiling how she continues to avoid concussion despite the regular beatings she receives in each and every book! She's some tough dame!

Good story poor narrator

I have read or listened to all the VI books. VI is 40 in this book but the narrator is a woman sounding considerably older. This makes listening a lot more stressful and the story hard to believe at times.

The story is told in real time not retrospectively.

Bad choice.

Destroyed by narration

I really enjoy Sarah Paretsky’s novels & decided to give an Audible version a try, but Lisa Ross’s voice, light & girly, is totally wrong for VI - needs depth & feistiness. Her intonation & inflection peculiar too. Had to stop listening after a chapter.
