About this listen

Liz Truss's disastrous premiership was the shortest and most chaotic in British history. In the space of just 49 days, Truss witnessed the death of the longest-reigning monarch, attempted to remould the economy, triggered a collapse in the value of Sterling and was forced on a series of embarrassing U-turns that ultimately led to her resignation. The aftershocks of her time in office are still felt today. How did she blow her opportunity so spectacularly?

Based on exclusive interviews with key aides, allies and insiders, and focusing on the critical steps that led to her demise, this gripping behind-the-scenes work of contemporary history gives the definitive account of Truss's premiership.

A wonderful account of truly momentous politics

Appreciating that this happened only two years ago it still can’t be underestimated how seismic some of these political events were. While there have been several accounts recently including a few which surprised me that completely absolved Truss of any blame (mr Peston being a good example), this is a fair assessment of all of the events that happened over this time and they really enjoyable listen that I could barely stop having on in the background.

The only thing I would knock this book down for isthe irritating effete voice used whenever quoting anything that Liz Truss said. In fairness this style carries over in a number of other books.

Fascinating

Well researched and presented narrative giving a fascinating insight into the huge challenges a new Prime Minister faces - and how Liz Truss seemingly failed them all

A horror story - gripping yet scary

Brilliantly researched, structured and written. Amazing that Seldon can fill a book with the events of of Truss' premiership given how brief it was. I couldn't write 400 page on any 6 week period of my life; and I was there! It's a sobering warning on not heeding warnings. Or when self belief morphs into self delusion. Politicians and other leaders need to read this and thank Anthony Seldon (and Liz Truss) for providing excellent guidance on how not to fluff it up.

The detail .

An absolutely brilliant book. I enjoyed every word. I must now return to the other books in this series about other Prime Ministers.

not as traumatic to re-live as I feared

a very fair and well-sourced traipse through the short hell that was the Trussell premiership.

Well written but toe curling subject matter.

Well written, although it’s hard to fathom the claim that she is intelligent, as the criteria were not defined. Would have been interesting to analyse the capability of the Tory party voters who voted for her, as the qualities described in this book were clearly evident before her election. Also what on earth was Cameron thinking to bring her into government? It is said that the electorate get the government they deserve….

Compelling and well researched

Anthony Seldon and collaborator again comes with the definitive portrait of a Prime Minister. Liz Truss comes across as intelligent and not without likeable qualities but seems hopelessly out of her depth at the pinnacle of power. Based on exhaustive 120 interviews and released official documents, the book should be regarded as definitive.
