Summary

Druid Atticus O'Sullivan hasn't stayed alive for more than two millennia without a fair bit of Celtic cunning. So when vengeful thunder gods come Norse by Southwest looking for payback, Atticus, with a little help from the Navajo trickster god Coyote, lets them think that they've chopped up his body in the Arizona desert. But the mischievous Coyote is not above a little sleight of paw, and Atticus soon finds that he's been duped into battling bloodthirsty desert shapeshifters called skinwalkers. Just when the Druid thinks he's got a handle on all the duplicity, betrayal comes from an unlikely source. If Atticus survives this time, he vows he won't be fooled again. Famous last words.

This is audiobook four of the Iron Druid Chronicles series. If you would like to hear more, you will find the first chapter of book five - Trapped - at the end of this recording.

Great story, dodgy dog voice.

I like this series and for the most part I enjoy the narration. Oberon's voice sounds stupid though.

Another Iron Druid installment

Any additional comments?

Review:
The openning gambit ushers the reader with Coyote in the central stage. Pairing "Coyote" and the title "Tricked" gave me a pretty good idea of what this story is gonna be... and I was right, giving an element of predictability in the book which I did not notice in previous books. Another thing new about this book is that I struggled to get through the first few chapters. I've had this book since it was published but I couldn't seem to get through it! I keep putting it down. Which is surprising because Kevin Hearne's story telling quality has always been compelling to me... except the first half of this book. So in the end I bought the audiobook version and I finally finished the book. However I found that once past the halfway mark, the story flowed in an even tempo and it was easy going until the end. It was just the first half that was hard work, but I persevered because I know that this author delivers. And, because I am an old fan of this series and I wanted to read the rest of the The Iron Druid books, and to understand the rest of the books I must read this book too. So that contributed to my persistence. Which paid off because Kevin Hearne did deliver in the end!

Empirical Evaluation:
Character Development = 4
World Building = 4.5
Plot = 3
Story = 3
Pace = (10hrs & 34mins listening time)
Ending = 4
Story Telling Quality = 4
Narration = 4

Druidry gets sexy!

Where does Tricked rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Up there with the best!!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Atticus is most certainly my favourite character with Oberon a close 2nd! Sexy, smart and totally badass I love Atticus. Bring on the film versions!!

What does Christopher Ragland bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Christopher Ragland is amazing!!!!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Being 2000 years old just got sexy! LOL

Any additional comments?

Can't wait for books 7,8 and 9!!

Fun, un-challenging action romp

I'm not sure I agree with the title. Yes OK so Atticus has to try to figure out the motivation of Coyote (a God known for trickery) but it wasn't really that much of a stretch. Having said that, I didn't get this book for it to be a stretch. It's a fun, easy going fantasy series that only requires half a brain - which is what I want as I'm listening to this on seriously long hikes. I need the other half of my brain for map reading etc and I don't want to be unduly concerned about the plot (i.e. I know it will work out ok in the end and that's fine).

It is nice to hear a bit more character development than in the last couple of books though.There are some genuinely funny jokes and themes running through it; I particularly love the sausage keeping score games between Atticus and his Irish Wolfhound. Nice. If you liked the other books, you'd like this. Actually, if you haven't listened / read the others it would be worth starting at the beginning. Not essential, but you'll get more out of it.

9.9/10

I love this series, hence 5 stars overall and for the story The only reason I’m not giving the narrator 5 stars is because of a few mispronunciations. I don’t know about the names of the Irish gods and characters, but Samhain is pronounced Saar-wen and ichor is eye-cor. Just a couple of picky little examples to make my point. I also think Oberon could sound more manly and gruff rather than ever-so-slightly Scooby-ish. I really love his narration and characterisations otherwise - I’ve even got used to Oberon - and would definitely read other books performed by him.
