About this listen
October 1943. Nancy Dalton, working at the RAF base at Scampton in Lincolnshire, has been holding vigil for the Lancaster bomber pilots whose missions seem endless. But her watchfulness has not prevented her own pilot brother from failing to return. In the midst of mourning him, fresh recruits arrive to continue the war effort, among them charismatic Canadian Steve Allard. The months ahead will be long and hard, with danger a constant companion, and although both Steve and Nancy never intend to complicate wartime life with romance, their attraction becomes impossible to ignore.

The cameraderie
I could really identify with this story as I was a Wren in the Fleet Air Arm, married a phantom pilot and became a squadron CO’s wife. We went through The Falklands conflict with the Sea Harriers. So the story from Scampton about those dreadful days on the Lancaster bombers really rang true. When my mother died I found a photo of a bomb aimer in her evening bag. He was probably killed. Terribly sad as there were so many tragic losses among those crews. Glad there was a happy ending for this story though.

Gentle Sweeping Story
I really enjoyed this audio book which for the most part was really well written and excellently narrated. The characters were well crafted which made me feel invested in them and wanting to find out more. I also like the fact that it ended with resolutions for all of the characters rather than leaving me feel like it was left in mid air. My only niggle was that in the middle of the book the author seemed obsessed with meal times and every one being ‘starving’. I know rationing was an issue during this period but it came across as if she couldn’t think of another way to change the stories direction. The narrator was brilliant. Her gentle tone and great accents really brought the narrative to life. Over all a lovely feel good listen.

Poor narration
Narration was disappointing. The story is good and moved at a reasonable if steady pace. A pleasant change from other novels of the genre.

Very enjoyable war time story
Really enjoyed this gentle story. Not an unpleasant character in the book. A little too good to be true in places but it kept me engaged and wanting to know what happened next.

Very weak
I gave up listening to this book after a few hours. It is a very weak story, narration is weak. The whole thing is written, in my opinion, in a very unrealistic way – almost juvenile style of writing. The way the characters speak to each other just does not ring true. I feel really annoyed with Amazon that they always seem to put the third rate books in their Plus catalogue.

Nice story - clunky dialogue performance
Story was nice and easy to listen to. Some of the dialogue was clunky - hard to tell if that was just the performance or the writing as well. Occasionally it seemed unnatural which detracted from immersion in the story.
