Summary

A historical fantasy that blends ageless themes of friendship and love into a quixotic tale of mystery and faith. Set in 13th century England, Edric, a man crippled in body and soul, begs, steals, and sometimes plays a pipe to make a living. Against his better judgment, he saves the life of Azriel...a man who claims to be an angel. But is this stranger a divine being or the escaped "Mad Monk" from a nearby monastery? The peasant woman who finds herself attracted to the acerbic Edric isn't certain, nor is the morose knight in desperate search of secrets to the afterlife. Another scheming monk seems to have all the answers...or does he? But circumstances cause the beggar, the monk, and the knight to collide in the same quest, some of whom would see Azriel permanently locked away and Edric hanged for murder.

Monk or Angel that is the question

A tale of twists and turns involving a Knight, a beggar, a monk and an Angel or is he a mad monk. I enjoyed the concept of being a who is he rather than a who done it.
I found this a really captivating book. Edric is a good man laid low by circumstances and a harsh life. He rescues a man from a ditch and life changes for him. At the centre of the tale is Azreal. He says he is an Angel but at the same time we hear that a mad monk has escaped the monastery. Both a Knight and a brother Monk are looking for him. I recommend listening to the very end and even though the outcome for some characters is not made clear it didn't diminish my enjoyment of the parable.

Joel Froomkin's narration is perfect. All the characters are clearly identifiable and he manages to capture not only their age but a feel of their station in this century. The impression of weary Edric downtrodden by life comes through as well as haughty Azreal. He manages to weave the characters around each other making it a treat to listen to and easier to visualise.

On the whole this is one I will happily listen to over again.
