Summary

In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, unearths a sentient book called Vella. Once a young sorcerer-bookbinder, Vella was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been collecting information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen’s world faces.Elsewhere, in an land ruled by priests, Rielle the dyer’s daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows she has a talent for it, and that there is a corrupter in the city willing to teach her how to use it – should she dare to risk the Angels’ wrath.Yet not everything is as Tyen and Rielle have been raised to believe. Not the nature of magic, nor the laws of their lands… and not even the people they trust.

Good characters, but story develops sloooooowly

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not, unless they have absolutely nothing else to listen to. The story has potential and is an interesting base for more, but it is simply too long for just laying the foundation for interesting things to come.

What could Trudi Canavan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

She could have either shortened the book, or she could have added more story development.

Which character – as performed by Grant Cartwright and Hannah Norris – was your favourite?

Tyen, but pretty much by default.

Did Thief's Magic inspire you to do anything?

No, other than pondering whether buying the sequel is worth it at all.

Trudi always surprises

Trudis stories always manages to surprise, and this is no exception.

I found this story hard to get into with the book but the audio version allowed me to finish the story on my car journeys.

Rolling book 2

The Start of another great series by Trudi Canavan

A great book. very well written and nicely read. I had not thought of having a female and a male reader for the two different sets of sections, it worked well.

Not What I Expected

This wasn't my usual read. Although I enjoyed the stories, I expected both stories to meet and become one in the end, as it didn't I found it confusing and an irritation . l also think there could have been more to the end of both stories, unless of course there is a follow on book. I may read another by this Auther to check and understand the style.

50/50

on the whole I am a fan of Trudi Canavan and so it was with great anticipation that I started her new series.
it started well enough when Tyen (a young student mage) finds an ancient magical book that has an entrapped woman inside it and his battle to save her and in turn himself is a wonderful read and very engrossing, but when we started to hear the other tale of Rielle and the magic of angels was when it fell apart for me, I understand that to get to a certain part of her story (trying to avoid spoilers here) that she has to go through turmoil and upheaval, but there is so much repetition of her angst, indecision and piousness that made the tale drag for me and in places the plot surrounding her and her tale of woe seemed too overly contrived, however once that was dealt with(80% of her tale unfortunately) her story opens up into what could potentially be on par with Tyen's, fingers crossed!

good start

It's a good set up for a universe, but there is no real story within this book, so is not a read alone book. The set up is good enough that I will get the next book though.

Good story, jarring narration

I enjoyed this book on first reading it and bought the audible version to refresh my memory before reading the final book. Unfortunately the narration of rielle's part was terrible. The accents and voices were awful and ruined my enjoyment to the extent that I could only listen to so much before getting irritated. Hugely disappointing. I can only hope there's a different narrator for the second book.

Two characters, only 1 interesting

The story jumps between two main characters, with the narrator changing as well. Tian's narrator is good and has a good range, however the narrator for Rielle is quite weak.

Tian's story is also far more interesting gripping than Rielles. a shame, as I was excited for this book as Trudi's other works have been fantastic. Took me a month and a half to get through this because of the lack of gripping factor other series such as The Black Magician Trilogy

Great start

On its own it won't make sense and there would be no conclusion, but it's a good introduction to the characters and story of this treliogy

Excellent

I absolutely loved it. Gripping story right from the beginning. Can't wait to get the second book of this story. The book has an end but leaves a lot open so you would want to hear the next story. The readers' voices were very clear and good too. Totally recommend it.
