Summary

"I deserve this." "This is my reward." "I'm allowed to treat myself." Ever uttered these statements to yourself as you opened a bottle of wine at five p.m.? If so, you're not alone.

Women around the globe are buying and consuming alcohol at alarming rates never seen before. But is it doing us any favors? Is it really that treat or reward that we deserve? Lotta Dann thinks not. In The Wine O'Clock Myth, Lotta takes an in-depth and eye-opening look at women's drinking habits. Written through the lens of her own story and her work in the field of addiction and recovery, Lotta explores the privileged position alcohol holds in our society, the way the liquor industry targets women and the damaging "Wine Mom" social media culture. She reveals the damage alcohol is causing to women: physically, emotionally, and socially; and the potential reasons why so many women are drinking at harmful levels. And she talks to a number of brave women who share detailed, intimate stories about their personal relationships with alcohol. Stories that are at times brutal and heartbreaking, but also inspiring and heart lifting.

The Wine O'Clock Myth is a powerful, important book that may well change the way you think about alcohol forever.

She gets it!

I've listened to a few books about alcohol and this is by far the best. Lotta Dann totally gets it! She feels like one of us, not some condescending health nut who wants to tell us how we are harming our health (she kind of does tell us, but it feels ok). She makes it ok to admit your drinking is out of hand, without saying you are an alcoholic, and even if you are an alcoholic, it doesn't make you a good for nothing wino. She delves into all the ways we've been lured into the drinking game and why it can be so difficult to get out. Great book!

Wish i’d have read rather than listened

Great information displayed in an interesting way.
Vital read for newly sober people and it’s really helped me reaffirm my own thoughts.

Only bug bear was the narration. I wish I’d have read it rather than listened

Vital reading for newly sober people

Newly sober, or still considering? I found this highly informative, filled with facts, it debunks myths and provides relatable stories. It doesn't go into the more scientific mechanisms around addiction very deeply, which I would recommend to read/listen to, for a more deeper understanding.

Relatable and informative

Hated the main narration but got through it by speeding it up to 1.2x (I do this for a lot of titles). Loved the balance of personality experience and factual information in the way the alcohol industry is geared towards and targeting women. Makes me want to boycott that just for the principle almost as much as staying sober. A great book for anyone exploring sobriety.

A motivating easy listen

I really enjoyed listening to all the different stories/experiences.

Many of us have been brainwashed/conditioned into thinking & feeling like alcohol is necessary in certain situations (eg socialising with friends). I’ve been finding books like this extremely helpful, in the de-conditioning process.

Am trying to flood my brain with ‘Quit lit’ books, to normalise the idea of not drinking alcohol.

Still listening!

Nearly had to return this because of the robotic narration then realised if you turn the speed to 1.5 it’s a lot better!!

Great book awful narration

This is an excellent book if you're considering quitting the booze. The narration is like listening to a robot. I only continued with it because I'd spent a credit on it. I did absolutely get used to it, and after a while it didn't bother me anymore.
