About this listen

'Shaw's novels combine a strong central character with an atmospheric setting and original plots' Sunday Times

If only Alexandra Cupidi had turned south instead of north, she would have found the dead woman.

Instead it is her vulnerable daughter Zoë who stumbles across Mimi Greene's lifeless body on the shoreline. A regular wild swimmer with a group of close friends, it's out of character for Mimi to have been swimming alone, especially in bad weather. DS Cupidi starts to suspect this is more than just an accidental drowning.

Meanwhile, her friend and colleague Jill Ferriter receives a mysterious letter from a man who claims to be her father. Stephen Dowles has been in prison for the last twenty years, convicted of two brutal and senseless murders.

With Cupidi obsessed by the death of Mimi Greene, Ferriter must lean on Bill South to uncover the facts around Dowles' conviction, revisiting old colleagues and criminals.

The Wild Swimmers is an explosive return to the DS Alexandra Cupidi Series, where the shores of the south Kent coastline expose deadly secrets.©2024 William Shaw (P)2024 Quercus Editions Limited

Critic reviews

Loved it. Atmospheric, complex and satisfying - this is another hugely gripping instalment in my favourite police series. (Mark Edwards)

So glad I discovered this author

Thank you very much for several enjoyable hours. It s so difficult to find a good detective story and likeable characters at the same time. The narration was very good too.

Another page-turner from William Shaw

A gripping read and excellent addition to a fabulous series. If you're already a fan of DS Alex Cupidi and Shaw's stories of her life and cases, this elevates their already stellar standard even further. If you're not, yet, while you can start with this one if you want to (no prior knowledge is necessary) you might prefer to begin at the beginning with Salt Lane and keep going from there.

This audio book, superbly narrated (or performed) by Jasmine Blackborow, is an excellent version providing complete immersion (get it?) in the story line while you are driving or doing mindless tasks. Stopping play is no easier than putting the book down. Thank you, William, for a thoroughly enjoyable read / listen.

Not quite as fluid as others in series

I liked the continuing story of Alexandra Cupidi and was keen to find out how it progressed her history. Some things seemed a bit forced for example Jill’s suddenly being contacted by her father out of the blue and the subsequent involvement of Bill without Alex’s help. It felt rather bitty and not so fluid as the earlier books.

New cadet

I had never heard of the author until I read a review of this book in a magazine. As an avid open water swimmer, I bought the hard copy as a gift for my swimming buddy and downloaded this to read. I will be reading other books by William Shaw, that’s for sure.

Series keeps getting better

This is a terrific series that's really grown on me, and this one is excellent - gripping dual track plots, interesting back stories and character cameos, plenty of action. One of the things I most appreciate is that the plotting doesn't rely on characters' withholding information from each other, or on badly timed interruptions, etc. This feels like a fully rounded, satisfying experience, and I cared what happened.

Worth the wait

There were twist and turns throughout and 2 great murder mysteries with 4 central characters who bring life and personality to the tale. I love this series and can’t wait for the next book.
