When her Uncle Joe is killed, Penny is left to handle the trading post in a fairly remote area of Colorado. He stays for a while, then much longer, and helps her get the store back on its feet. A romance develops, but the salesman is aware of what folks might think, so he stays a little distant. After helping with some dire events that happen later, they weather the Colorado winter together, hoping that God will protect them through the biting coldness of snow and heavy blizzards, as well as their undeniable attraction to each other.
