Summary

Set in the world of the Victorian professional and landed classes, the story centres on Mr Harding, a clergyman of great personal integrity who is nevertheless in possession of an income from a charity far in excess of the sum devoted to it.

A guileless gentleman with a conscience stands firm

A very satisfying story with uperb but not ungentle satire. An excellent rendering of all the characters by Nigel Hawthorne.

Another hit

I thought I’d sussed this one early on but I was wrong. There were so many tests and turns including a final one which I definitely didn’t see beforehand..

Another super read read and written well.

Trollope perfectly read by Nigel Hawthorne

A perfect reading of Trollope's the Warden by the much missed Nigel Hawthorne.
A few audio glitches (e.g. ~4:52:18) and accidental cuts at the end of audio chapters (e.g. ~2:35:04), but, otherwise, an excellent reading that kept my interest for almost 8 hours.

A bargain at £2.49 when bought with the Kindle eBook (~£1). However, I haven't been able to synchronise the audio & text, and, to be perfectly honest, I'd rather either listen or read this gentle story - not both! (If it was a play or poetry, then perhaps it would work.)

description of relationships

the sensitive language, the delivery, the story, everything about it was so listenable to!!! the development of characters right through the story made one feel as if the individual characters were personally known to the listener....

Four stars

Good rather than great. Verbose on occasion but more often witty & wise. Fine narration.

Boring Pointless Farcical Story.

Great narrator but this story is just a ridiculous farce of stupid people doing stupid things.
So many people rave about this book but it's not a patch on the Palliser novels.

It's satirical but it doesn't work.
the protagonist is a stupid gullible man who clearly doesn't know what's going on.
I'm hoping the rest of the Barchester chronicles are better than this weak debut.
