Summary

Are you ready for the truth about World War Two?

In the first of an extraordinary three-volume account of the war on land, in the air and at sea, James Holland not only reveals the truth behind the familiar legends of the Second World War but he also unveils those lesser known events which were to have the greatest significance.

The first book to consider the economic, political and social as well as the military aspects of World War Two, this is a unique retelling of a monumental event in all its terrible and majestic glory.

Holland has spent over 12 years unearthing new research, visiting archives, battlefields and the very people who fought and lived through the conflict. He has, in his own accessible and inimitable style, written an account to redefine our understanding of the war. It is unlike anything else on the subject.

Factually gripping

Fantastic work as always James. Your ability to weave human drama into the cold facts of war is second to none

Great detailed history

I felt that the book went in a different direction from other older histories i have partaken in. The use of eye witnesses was very well done and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Can't wait to read part 2.

Finally a complete account

Now that a lot of documents have been declassified to know the context and detail of many of the actions and happenings was really thrilling. It is a bit long but we'll worth it. After all is the history of the war.

All new history

Lots of little nuggets of information that I had never heard before. Please just give up on the weird foreign accents. It just spoils it

Really Impressive compelling listen

This is a very well crafted and insightful view of a major episode in Modern History. I particularly enjoyed the layering of events and back story combined with comprehensive and comparative analysis of relative strength and performance of the organizations, equipment and technology. I liked the Narrators pace and tone, and although his voice characterisations were very good personally I didn’t think they were needed. If you’ve read or studied this period of WW2 history this book will make you think, I’m starting Volume 2 now so that’s the best recommendation

AN INTERESTING LISTEN

It was an interesting book to listen to. What spoiled it for me were the many, varied but essentially unconvincing accents employed by Mr Pugh and his insistence on using German phonetics so liberally.

Only improvement would be if it was 28 hours long

It’s great and somehow is as informative as a textbook but as interesting as a novel
